Dear List,

Like so many of us on this list, I too hated history at school (the little I did in Primary school), but have become more and more interested in the subject due to our geneaology research. Looking through our Stairs List I came across the following entry and wonder if there is anyone who can throw more light on the matter:

Transvaal Archives:

"Banier van SuidRhodesia wat deur die Rapportryers aldaar gebruik is. Kleure daarvan is rooi, wit, geel en blou (dwars) met in die middel die skild. Veldkornet CP van Helsdingen het die name van ses veldkornette en nege-en-veertig Rapportryers van Rhodesia op die geel strook laat druk."

Rough translation: "Banner from Southern Rhodesia that was used by the Rapportryers. The colours are red, white, yellow and blue (across) with the shield in the middle. Field cornet CP van Helsdingen had the names of six field cornets and forty nine Rapportryers from Rhodesia printed on the yellow strip."

There is no date given.

Was this something to do with the Boer war, or was it later on?? (We have a Corporal Carel Pieter van Helsdingen who received a Boer war medal - any connection)??
What is the connection to Southern Rhodesia??

I am mystified, so please any information will be appreciated.
