The Kowie is a river in the Eastern Cape.(Port Alfred) There was a lot of unrest between the Xhosa, as they were called then and
the Europeans. It was part of the Frontier region which was settled by Europeans as a sort of border area, the Europeans received
land and were expected in return to help protect the borders. Of course this was not always explained and many were quite
surprised upon arriving to find that they were to be armed at all times when working in the fields. There were a series of wars.
(1789, 1799, 1812, 1819, 1834, 1846, 1850, 1877 ..
Port Alfred, Bathurst and surrounding areas were the parts of Albany first settled. Port Alfred was meant to be the port for the
1820 settlers however it was not very suitable, so instead the settlers were offloaded in Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth).
There are various names for the various conflicts including Kaffir wars, Anglo-Xhosa wars, Xhosa wars. There are also a number of
various names for this area, Albany, Sunshine Coast, Settler Country, Frontier Country.
