Subject: [SACKETT-L] Marion Sackett's Notes & Thoughts on Chris Sackett's US Researches: New Haven Records
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 14:35:55 +0100
Dear List,
Cousin Marion has written some very helpful notes on a big batch of
research data I sent her. Here is note 'A' - New Haven Vital Records.
"1. The mystery '1640' reference to John Sackett 'in New Haven records'.
(a) As it can be difficult to be sure whether dates are 'New Style' or 'Old
Style', did Chris search from 1 Jan 1639/40 through to 24 Mar 1640/41?"
"(b) In my experience (& there are plenty of examples in the IGI) this
date confusion can also cause 'date migration' when a 2nd writer makes an
incorrect assumption about the 'style' of date being used by an earlier
writer, so it is always worth searching the year before & the year after a
supposed date of an event - in this case, 1639 & 1641. Thus it is possible
that the 'Stolya Case' of 1641 was mistakenly thought to be 1640? Of
course, the heading given by you from NHCR1:56 "the 4th of the 6t M: 1641"
makes this unlikely if the original documents were being researched, as it
clearly refers to 4th August 1641 - but did Weygant see this document?"
"2. I wonder when the Stolyon household came to New Haven, and where from?
As far as I can tell from the general reading I have done, emigrants to New
England at that stage fell mainly into 3 classes:-
(a) Persons of sufficient wealth to finance themselves in the enterprise.
(b) Servants of (a) - could John have come to New Haven with the Stolyons?
(c) Convicts sent to the colonies as Indentured Servants - I have searched
all the printed lists of these held at the PRO, & have not found any
Sacketts.
Stolyon does not sound an English name to me. I wonder if anyone in the USA
is researching that line & has info. about its origins?"
"3. Do the printed records of New Haven include church records of the sect
or sects present in the early days (pre 1650)? If not, could there be
surviving church records (maybe still in the custody of the church) which
include the 1640 reference? If John Sackett really did have a roving eye,
he might well have received censure for his morals from church elders!"
"4. The printed records are "edited"; could this mean "incomplete"?"
"5. Will of 1684 - I agree it is definitely John Senior, not because of the
initial letter so much as the 2nd letter [looks a bit like an 'o'] which is
a classic secretary hand 'e' not 'u'."
"6. One inventory of Lieut John Sackett is clearly dated 1703. Some of the
later writings are dated by the opening headings of the sittings of the
Court of Probate being on the same page (Dec 1717 -> March 1717/8). Does
Chris have dates for the others? I guess they are all in the 1717-18
period."

Comments by Chris:
1(a). Yes, I did check this period.
1(b). I think it probable that Weygant did not see these New Haven records.
We know that he did not see John Sackett Senior's inventory, relying on a
report of "a search of Probate office of New Haven made by the venerable
L.B.Sackett, Esq., Attorney-at-Law, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in 1850." If he
had gone to New Haven, he would surely have checked this document for
himself.
2. I have tried some limited research on Stolyo(n). LDS FamilySearch has 4
Stolyons: Ann, Elysabeth (both IGI British), Maria (Ancestral File), &
Thomas (Ancestral File). As our ref. is to the widow Stolyon, the only one
of these of interest is a possible husband, Thomas. There are 2 submissions
for Thomas on the AF, but they are obviously the same man. 1. birth abt.
1620 Mayfield, Sussex, Eng., spouse Jane Edwards. 2. birth abt.1611
Mayfield, Sussex, Eng., marriage Jane Edwards abt. 1636. Given the very
small number of Stolyons on these records, it looks as if Jane Edwards,
wife of this Thomas Stolyon, could be our widow Stolyon. The dates are
about right - and it looks as if it would be this Thomas who emigrated to
the USA. Internet Family Finder on Family Tree Maker has the following
index entry to The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776, by Peter Wilson
Coldham: Stolyon, Thomas. Date 1600-1609. Location: United States. Found
on: CD350. Link: The Complete Book of Immigrants, 1607-1776. Does anyone
have access to this book (or the CD of it) to look up the full record?
3. Does anyone know of any early church records in New Haven?
4. Apart from the New Haven Probate Records, all the records I looked at
were printed books, not original records.
6. We're a bit stuck with the dates of the early NH probate records.
Carolyn, can you shed any light on this?
Regards,
Chris
