Subject: [SACKETT-L] Sacketts in Vermont
Date: Fri, 25 May 2001 22:21:51 -0400
Mary Lou:
You probably know this already but...
There were a limited number of Sacketts in Weygant's book who migrated to Vermont.
Descendants of Simon Sackett, children of (202) Jonathan and Hannah Phelps Sackett:
645. WILLIAM SACKET, 1753-1842, p. 156
648. Abigail Sacket, b. in 1758, m. Maj. Joseph Thayer, p. 108, and Eleazer Finney's 1811 letter from VT.
651. Phene Sacket, b. in 1764, m. Jonathan Nichols. page 108, and info from Luella Ormsby.
652. FILER SACKET, 1766-1834, p. 158
Descendants of John Sackett of New Haven, CT.:
710. MARY SACKETT, daughter of (267) Richard Sackett, p. 163; About 1768 they settled at Arlington, Vt.
711. RICHARD SACKETT, 1749-1789, son of (267) Richard Sackett, p. 163. . In 1775 he disposed of the last piece of his property at New Milford and became a permanent resident of Arlington, Vt.
714. AARON SACKETT, grandson of (75) Capt. Richard and Margery L. Sleade Sackett, was by occupation a farmer and resided near Rutland, Vermont. p. 491 [Father's name not known. -T. King]
The William Sacket in the 1790 and 1800 would be #645 above:
1790:
, William, Thetford Town, Orange Co. 2 males over 16, 2 males under 16, 4 females. [son of Jonathan and Hannah Phelps Sacket]
[William moved from Warren, CT. to Thetford, Orange Co., VT. in 1788. In 1788 he had the following children:
Prudence, bef. 1784
Ruby, bef. 1784
Vina, b. bef. 1784
Russell , b. 12 Mar 1787
possibly, Eunice, b. 20 Aug 1788.
and then;
Garry Van, b. 9 Aug 1790.
This would equal the census above, with one male over 16 who is unknown and would not be one of his chilcren.]
-----------------
1800:
Sacket, William in Thetford, Orange Co., 1,2,1 - 1 /2,1,1,1,-,- [son of Jonathan and Hannah Phelps Sacket]
By 1800 William had:
Prudence, bef. 1784
Ruby, bef. 1784
Vina, b. bef. 1784
Russell , b. 12 Mar 1787
Eunice, b. 20 Aug 1788.
Garry Van, b. 9 Aug 1790.
Jonathan, b. 3 May 1792
Matilda, b. 2 Apr 1796
Anna, b. 8 Aug 1798.
The absence of one of the daughters in the 1800 census would indicate she had married, or possibly died by then.
=============================================
The Filer Sacket in the 1800 Census would be #652 above:
Sacket, Filer - Panton, Addison Co. 2 - - 1 -, 1 - - 1 - - [son of Jonathan and Hannah Phelps Sacket]
By 1800 Filer had:
Jonathan Sacket, b. Oct. 7, 1789; d. Oct. 17, 1789.
Letus Sacket, b. Aug. 23, 1793, d. Feb. 3, 1853; m. five wives.
Clara Sacket, b. Aug. 28, 1799, d. June 16, 1883; m. Alpheus Atwood
However, according to Weygant there was only one son and one daughter living in 1800.
The letter from Eleazer Finney from Monkton Addision county state of Vermont
28th July 1811 mentions both William and Filer:
"Some of your uncle Jonathan Sacketts Family who went into the Coos country have removed to the westward perhaps where you hear from them. Filer lived in this town a few years but was rather
unsteady and did not make it go very well. Wm has been here and Major Thayr who married Aabby but I
understand they are all gone to the west."
Eleazer also said:
"...the town of Monkton and Hinesburgh which joines it to to the North are setled a great deal from New milford, Kent and Warren as is likewise Ferrisburgh east of us."
I would assume that Eleazer Finney was aware that the other Sacketts were living in the area. Therefore, I would be led to believe that he knew that they were from a different Sackett line.
==============================================
Of the descendants of John of New Haven:
710. MARY SACKETT, daughter of (267) Richard Sackett, was married to ISRAEL CAMFIELD. About 1768 they settled at Arlington, Vt.
711. RICHARD SACKETT, 1749-1789, of New Milford, Conn., and Arlington, Vt., son of (267) Richard Sackett, was married previous to 1776 to MARTHA BENEDICT, 1756-1812. On the death of his father, in 1771, he came into possession of several pieces of real estate at New Milford, including the homestead farm. In 1775 he disposed of the last piece of his property at New Milford and became a permanent resident of Arlington, Vt. He died at Arlington in the spring of 1789, survived by his wife Martha, three sons and a daughter. On June 24, following, Mrs. Sackett gave birth to a second daughter. ... some two years after the death of her husband, Richard Sackett, in 1789, was married to Jason Kellogg.

714. Aaron Sackett, grandson of (75) Capt. Richard and Margery L. Sleade Sackett, was by occupation a farmer and resided near Rutland, Vermont. [Weygant gives no indication which one of Capt. Richard Sackett's sons was the father of Aaron.], page 491.
He had at least three Children.
12720. William Sackett, b. Sept. 2, 1800, d. July 29, 1863; m. Mercy Sleade Earle.
12721. Charles Sackett.
[Weygant listed only two]
From: Kathy <>:
It is said that the Frederick Plummer Sackett book, has Aaron Sackett, as the son of Dr. John Sackett.
Aaron married Phebe HART, 06 Jul. 1786 in Litchfield Co., CT. (This is what is in the IGI).
Children:
1) Hulda, b. 25 Jun. 1787; m. Stephen HYDE
2) Elizabeth, b. 08 Apr. 1789; m. Sewell GUNN
3) Clarissa, b. 26 May 1791; m. ? THOMPSON
4) Charles, b. 23 May 1793; died 07 Aug. 1789; m. Saloma BALCOM
5) Amanda, b. 17 Aug. 1795; died 28 Jan. 1871; m. Joseph REMINGTON
6) Phebe, b. abt. 27 May 1798; died abt. 1879; m. Levi NICHOLS (my ggggrand-
parents)
7) William, b. 02 Sept. 1800; m. Mercy Sleade EARLE
8) Electa, b. 28 Sept. 1802; m. ? HAMMOND
9) Nancy, b. 04 Jan. 1805; m. Joel HART
10) Malinda, b. 29 Oct. 1807; m. Albert WILLIAMS
------------------------------
(75) Capt. Richard had three sons,
1.) (267)Richard (1701-1771) who is listed with five children including one son named (711) Richard (1749-1789) and on pages 163-166 we find that (711) Richard Sackett moved to New Milford, CT. and later he moved to Arlington VT. where he died in 1789.
2) (268) John Sackett, M. D. who is listed with 10 children including four sons Ezekiel, Benjamin, Richard, and John. It is possible Dr. John was Aaron's father. BUT... it appears that Dr. John lived and died in NY. and if Aaron was his son that would have made 11 children. And Dr. John's sons (716) Capt Benjamin stayed in NY; (717) Richard stayed in NY, and (719) John stayed in NY. There is one child without a name listed: (724) ______ Sackett, m. ______ Wadsworth.
3) (271) Josiah Crego Sackett and his wife died in New Milford, CT. "several years before" the Rev. War. began and their children were distrubuted among their mother's people. Of their five children, one, (728) ______ Sackett, is not given a name.
There is nothing positive to go on to establish the parents (714) Aaron Sackett. It also becomes obvious that there were no children named Joseph in any of these families.
The best possibility I see in Weygant's book is one I think I remember you posting a query about some time ago. That would be:
81. Joseph Sackett, 1712-17_?, of New Haven, Conn., son of (20) Lieut. Joseph and Hannah Denison
Sackett. By the terms of his will which is recorded in probate office at Paughkeepsie, he bequeaths all
of his property in Dutchess County to his son Samuel, who is supposed to have been the first of his line
to settle in Dutchess County.
Children.
276. Sarah Sackett.
277. Reuben Sackett.
278. Joseph Sackett.
279. Hester Sackett, b. in 1743, d. May 6, 1816.
280. Samuel Sackett, b. in 1747, d. Aug. 20, 1816; m. Thankful Wood.
It is interesting that Weygant lists him as being "of New Haven, Conn." and yet his will is recorded in Paughkeepsie, NY. and he bequeths his property in Dutchess Co., NY. to his son Samuel. It is also interesting to note that Weygant does not give the date it was probated. It would appear from the birth date of (280) Samuel that (81) Joseph Sackett died after 1747. Joseph was born in 1712 which would make his probable marriage date in the 1730s. If (277) Reuben Sackett and (278) Joseph Sackett above grew to maturity, they would be prime prospects for being the older Reuben and Joseph found in the 1790 and 1800 Vermont Census.
It will be interesting to see if anyone has access to the other materials and whether or not they contain any information to tell where these Sacketts came from.
