Hi Sackett Searchers:

Photocopies of the Westfield Town Records sent to me by Linda Hare show that Weygant has a "major goof" (Linda called it a "Glaring Omission") in his book.

Records in "The Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts; Birth, Marriages & Deaths, 1690-1765" indicate that Weygant erroneously placed (185) Asher Sacket b. 1748 as the son of (41) Israel Sacket and an unnamed spouse instead of in the family of (35) Daniel Sacket and Mary Weller. In the record for the family of (35) Daniel Sacket and Mary Wellor we read:

Daniel Sacket and Mary Wellor, above named, was joyned in Marriage by John Ashley, Justus of peace on the first day of February 1732/3
Margaret Sacket the Daughter of Danile Sacket and Mary his wife was born December 4 1733
Daniel Sacket the Son of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was born March the 6th 1734/5
Ozem Sacket the Son of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was born February 24 day 1736/7
Mary Sacket the Daughter of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was born November 21 day 1738
Ann Sacket the Daughter of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was born February 28 day 1740
Moses Sacket the Son of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was born November 29 day 1743
Israel Sacket the Son of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was born February 10 day 1745/6
Gad Sacket & Asher Sacket ye sons of Daniel Sacket & ye Mary his wife was born April 17, 1748.
Ann Sacket ye Daughter of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was bornDyed September 21, 1750
Aner Sacket ye Son of Daniel Sacket and Mary his wife was born October 11, 1751.
Daniel Sacket Dyed February 9, 1776

[It will be noted that there were twin sons born to Daniel and Mary: "Gad Sacket & Asher Sacket ye sons of Daniel Sacket & ye Mary his wife was born April 17, 1748." This record indicates that (185) Asher Sacket b. 1748; listed as a son of (41) Israel Sacket in Weygant's book). was a twin brother to (171) Gad Sacket b. 17 Apr 1748, son of (35) Daniel Sacket.]
Weygant's record for (35) Daniel's family on page 46 reads:

35. Daniel Sacket, 1693-1776, of Westfield, Mass., son of (8) John and Deborah Filley Sacket, was married, Feb. 1, 1732, to Mary Weller, daughter of Eleazer Weller, Jr. Mr. Sackett was an active participant in Colonial wars. In 1723 he served as a sentinel in Capt. Adgat Dewey.s troop of horse. He was also a member of the company of troops commanded by Capt. Hezekiah Noble, and was on duty guarding Westfield under Capt. John Ashley. (See Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 91, pages 94 and 164.)

Children.

164. Margaret Sacket, b. Dec. 4, 1732.
165. Daniel Sacket, b. Mar. 6, 1734, d. in year 1824.
166. Ozem Sacket, b. Jan. 24, 1736, d. in year 1801; m. Mercy Weller.
167. Mary Sacket, b. Nov. 21, 1738.
168. Ann Sacket, b. Feb. 28, 1740, d. Sept. 21, 1750.
169. Moses Sacket, b. Nov. 29, 1743; m. Eunice Cadwell.
170. Israel Sacket, b. Feb. 10, 1746, d. in year 1786; m. (193) Eunice Sacket.
171. Gad Sacket, b. Apr. 13, 1748; m. Lucy Williams.
172. Abner Sacket, b. Oct. 11, 1751; m. Rhoda Kellogg.
173. ______ Sacket.

It will be noted that Weygant does not have Asher included in this family. However, it appears that he had information that indicated that there were 10 children in the family, so he included (173) ________ Sacket. This would indicate that Weygant had not seen the Westfield Records.

However, Weygant did include Asher in his book. But he placed him as a son of (41) Israel Sacket, a half brother to (35) Daniel Sacket. Weygant's record on page 48 reads:

41. Israel Sacket, 1706-1786, of Westfield, Mass., son of (8) John and Mahitable Danks (Harris)
Sacket.

Child.

185. Asher Sacket, b. in year 1748; m. Leah Kellogg.

Weygant's record for the family of (185) Asher Sacket on page 105 reads:

185. Asher Sacket, 1748-1830, of Westfield, Mass., son of (41) Israel Sacket, was married in 1772 to Sarah Kellogg. He served in the War of the Revolution in Capt. Daniel Sacket's Company of Col. John Moseley's Hampshire County Regiment. The official state records show that he enlisted Oct. 21, 1776, and marched with his regiment, under Lieut. Colonel Timothy Robinson, to reinforce the Northern Army. The muster toll, giving date of his enlistment, is dated at Westfield.

Children.

585. Lovell Sacket.
586. Peggy Sacket, m. Charles Lee.
587. Shubael Sacket, b. in year 1778, d. in year 1831.
588. Clymena Sacket.
589. Sally Sacket, b. about 1781, d. May 15, 1826; m. Herman [sic] [Heman] Noble.
590. Henry Sacket.
591. Daniel Sacket.
592. Asher Sacket, Jr., b. in 1782.
593. Jerusha Sacket.
{It will be noted that Weygant changed the name of Asher's wife from Leah to Sarah in his account of the family. The account on page 105 has the correct name for his wife; as shown by the Westfield record below.]

The Westfield Record reads:

Asher Sacket & Sarah Kellogg was married by Rev'nd John Ballantine September 17, 1772
Lovell Sacket, son of Asher Sacket and his wife Sarah was born Decem 21, 1772
Sally Sackett, the Daughter of Asher Sacket & Sarah his wife was botn April 13, 1774
Peggy Sacket, the Daughter of Asher Sacket and Sarah his wive was born May 14th 1775
Shubael Sacket, son to Asher & Sarah his wife was born Oct 5th 1778
Clymina Sacket, Daughter to Asher & Sarah his wife was born Oct 10th 1781
Jerusia Sacket, Daughter to Asher & Sarah his wife was born Oct 16th, 1783
Henry Sacket, Son to Asher & Sarah his wife was born April 4th 1784
Daniel Sacket, Son to Asher & Sarah his wife was born Aug. 6th 1786
Asher Sacket, Son of Asher Sacket, & Sarah his wife was born March 10, 1788
Jerusha Sacket, Daughter of Asher Sacket & Sarah his wife, was born, Sept. 23, 1790

This list of children for Asher Sacket and Sarah Kellogg indicates that Weygant had not seen the Westfield Records for himself. The evidence of this is found in the fact that he gave only the year of birth for (587) Shubael and (592) Asher, Jr. and an estimated year of birth for (589) Sally and he leaves out Jersuia. I feel confident that, if Weygant had seen this record, that he would have given the dates for all the children instead of just the year for two and an estimated year for another.

Placing Asher as the son of (41) Israel Sacket is complicated by the fact that no records have been found for him beyond the record of his birth. No marriage record and no records of children born to him.

I will be generating a note to be placed in the family of (35) Daniel Sacket and Mary Weller to indicate that "173. ______ Sacket" should be Asher Sacket and also in the family of (41) Israel Sacket to indicate that "185. Asher Sacket, b. in year 1748" is actually the son of (35) Daniel Sacket and Mary Weller. Insofar as Weygant has the family and descendants of Asher listed under the number 185, I will use that number for him and use Weygant's numbers for his children and descendants.
