Dear Chris!
It's always so GREAT to hear from you! As in the past, you help
bring us back to our senses. A lot of the subscribers never
experienced your Aunt Lillie stories and how helpful you were
in the formation of this list.
I am willing to add anything deemed valuable on the SACKETT-L web
site, to preserve the family's data. It's no longer on my place of
employment's web pages so I can now add images, etc. I'll have to
ask at work about forcing a username and password on a page. I don't
know whether we can do that on Freepages. I'd think you'd have to
have your own server. Does anyone have a server we could use to
be able to have username and password access to a MEMBER ROOM...? :}
Keeping it simple goes along with sub-committee's thoughts on the
upcoming survey with Darlene's encouragement. Avoiding the collection
of dues flows with mine and Thurmon's concerns.
Later...Nancy

Dear Nancy & All,
Just picking up the threads of the current debate after being away for a
week and thought I'd record my willingness to help with anything that aims
to preserve what we've accomplished so far and to develop the Discussion
List into an Association or whatever.
On PRESERVATION - a first thought would be to gather and record a WHO HAS
THE DATA? web page. At it's simplest this could be done by asking all
members to describe what SACKETT DATA they have and then adding this to the
alphabetical members list on Nancy's Site. Getting a bit more sophisticated,
we could produce highly detailed lists of RESEARCHERS (our members) and of
REPOSITORIES (where they got their data from). The goal here would be to
produce a list of all SOURCES of Sackett data so that current and future
researchers would know what had been researched. Examples might be a family
bible in the possession of a list member detailing a particular Sackett
family or the fact that Chris Sackett has the complete listing of baptisms,
marriages and burials for St Peter in Thanet (researched by Marion Sackett).
I would be willing to gather all this sort of information from our
membership and publish it on a web page.
On DEVELOPMENT - there has been quite a lot of discussion on the GoONs List
(Guild of One-Name Studies) about Associations, Preservation of Data, etc.,
and I will go back through the archives and see what other people are doing.
No need to re-invent the wheel, I think. Just copy what seems to be good
practice, keeping in mind our key objective - to ensure the availability of
our hard-won data for future generations of researchers. Whatever we do, I
think we should try to keep it simple. Ideas like sharing website passwords
among a group of "committee" members seems like a good safeguard, but I
think having fees is probably an unnecessary complication. One thought I had
would be to have a MEMBERS ROOM on the main website. This would be
accessible to List Members via a password and would contain web pages with
data we might want to protect from trawlers who gather up genealogical data
for publication for profit elsewhere. I know that some members are concerned
about this practice and it might encourage members to publish their data if
it could be kept in a "private" members-only area. I think this would also
help foster the feeling that there is really something rather special about
being a member of the Sackett Family Association - (Club?, Society?).
My tuppence worth. I'll get back with any further thoughts.
Best regards,
Chris Sackett
