Nez,
There is no one answer to whether Quakers were allowed to join
fraternal lodges. From the Quaker email list I learned that it was
possible for them to be members but usually not. They refused to take
oaths which is a large part of the fraternal organizations. On the
other hand many Quakers were in the Masons, Knights of Pythias, etc. and
continued to attend Quaker meetings although they might not be able to
hold a position in the Monthly Meeting.
As for Benjamin F. Saint as a possible son of William Saint Sr. I would
have to say no. There isn't any reference to a Benjamin Saint in the IN
Quaker records.
There is another possibility. If you have access to the Green
Township, Randolph Co., IN 1850 Census, go to page 142, dwelling number
1402. There is a Joseph Saint(s), age 37, born in Germany. This is a
very hard entry to read and you might read it differently. His wife is
Elizabeth, age 37, born in NJ, with children:
1. Lorenzo, age 12, born in IN
2. Samuel, age 12, born in IN
3. John W., age 8, born in IN
4. Hannah, age 10, born in IN
5. Elizabeth J., age 4, born in IN
6. Francis M. (or W.), age 4/12, born in IN
