SANDERSON.
There were two early settlers of Watertown, Mass., of the name of
Sanderson, viz.,
Robert Sanderson and Edward Sanderson. What affinity there was between
them has not been
ascertained.
ROBERT SANDERSON.
Robert Sanderson and his wife, Lydia, were among the first settlers of
Hampton, N.H.,
in 1638, where they had a daughter, Mary Sanderson, baptized October 29,
1639. Soon
after this he moved to Watertown, Mass. where he was a proprietor in 1642
and where
he married about 1642, Mary, the widow of John Cross. He remained in
Watertown until
about 1653, when he moved to Boston, Mass., where he was a deacon, and
died there,
October 7, 1696. July 20, 1650, then of Watertown, sold to Richard Swaine,
a house
and ten acres of land at Hampton. October 17, 1653 he, "a silversmith"
then said to
be of Watertown, bought land in Watertown from William Godfey. His
children, after
he left Hampton, by his 2nd wife were:

1. Joseph Sanderson born (birth recorded in Cambridge, Mass.) January 1,
1642-3,
2. Benjamin Sanderson bap. at Watertown, July 29, 1646.
By wife Mercy he had:
3. Mary Sanderson born at Watertown Nov 29, 1647.
4. Sarah Anderson bap. at Watertown Jan 18, 1650-4.
5. Robert Anderson bap. at Watertown Oct 8, 1652.

By his wife Elizabeth he had:

6. Joseph Sanderson born at Cambridge, Mass., Oct 10, 1684.

He had a 3rd wife, names Hester.

John Hull, a Selectman, and many years Town Treaurer of Boston, a man of
great wealth
and the first mint-master of New England, and the coiner of the "pine tree
coin,"
in his diary, under date of 1652-3, relates how he was chosen to make
coins, and adds,
"I chose my friend Robert Sanderson to by my partner, to which the Court
consented."
On September 1, 1658, he says, "my boy, John Sanderson complained of his
head aching,
and took to his bed; a strong fever set in, and after seventeen days sore
sickness,
he departed this life." Under date of November 8, 1658, he says, "the
Lord exercised
with sickness my partner, Robert Sanderson and his son, Joseph Sanderson,
but yet was
pleased to recover them both. Joseph kept the house about one month and my
partner,
eighteen days."

Jeremy Dummer and Samuel Paddy, Apprentices.

*When his only daughter, Hannah, was married to Judge Samuel Sewall as his
2nd wife,
he is said to have put her onto a scale, so as to balance her weight for
her dowry.
In his diary, July 1, 1658, he says, "I received into my house, Jeremy
Dummer and
Samuel Paddy, to serve me as apprentices eight years." (see Farmer.)

Sanderson sold house to William Shattuck, Sr.

(1) Edward Sanderson who married, October 15, 1645, Mary Eggleston, perhaps
the
oldest dau. of Bagot & Briget Eggleston, of Dorchester, Mass., afterwards
of Windsor,
Conn. The birth of only one child, Jonathan Sanderson, is recorded in
Watertown. He
solde his house and land in Watertown to William Shattuck, Sr. and
probably moved to
Cambridge. In the church records is this record: "March 20, 1686-7,
baptized Hester
Saunders, a daughter of Edward Saunders." The name of this family
(Sanderson) in the
early records, is frequently written Sanders or Saunders*. From Edward
Sanderson are
descended most of the families of the name of Sanderson, in Watertown,
Waltham and
the town of Weston, Massachusetts.
footnote:
* Abigail Saunders who married at Watertown, Oct 27, 1687, to Shubal Child.
Hannah Sanders, who married at Watertown, August 6, 1695, Richard Norcross,
Jr.

SANDERSON.

In 1713-1714, Robert Sanderson, a goldsmith of Boston, Mass. and his wife,
Esther,
sold 11 acres of land in Waterown. Robert Sanders, a foreigner and a
pauper, died at
Watertown September 8, 1824, supposed to be aged 96.

In a Deed, (John Ball to Richard Child, Vol. vi. pp 18 and 19) Edward
Saunders is
mentioned as a proprietor of Watertown in 1674. Mary Eggleston, a dau. of
Bigot
Eggleston, was born March 29, 1641 and Mary, the wife of Edward
Sanderson, may have
been a sister of Bigot. January 29, 1660-1, Edward Sanderson was then
living at
Watertown with six children, living in indigence. Ann Sanders of
Watertown was bap-
tized in the First Church of Boston, Mass., October 29, 1654. It was
probably his
widow ("Sanders") who was assisted by the Selectmen

in January, 1687. There is little doubt that Abigail Saunders, wife of
Shubael
Child, and Hannah Saunders, wife of Richard Norcross, Jr., were daughters
of Edward
Sanderson.
