Hello List and Carrie,
Some cousins and I believe that our John W. Sandlin was the son of Jessie and
Mary Sandlin -- probably the oldest child. I did find Jessie Sandlin listed
in the 1850 Walker County census as family 245. The members of the family
listed are as follows:
Jessie Sandlin, 46, farmer, born SC
Marry Sandlin, 43, born SC
Anderson, 18, born Ala
Aere (sp), 16, born Ala
Nancy, 14, born Ala
Horatio, 4, born Ala
Alfred, 11, born Ala
Sarah, 9, born Ala [Carrie's ancestor]
Wina, 7, born Ala [Does anyone know if this child lived to adulthood?]
William, 4, born Ala
Henry S., 1/12, born Ala
My guess is that the children above were born in Walker or possibly Blount
counties. There is a land record where Jessie received land in I think 1837
or 1839 in Walker County (from memory). There is another record of Jessie
receiving land in 1859 in Marion County. I believe the family moved to Marion
between 1850 and 1860 as they show up in Marion in 1860. John W. and Arminta
Sandlin (family 250) are also listed in the 1850 census of Walker County
along with four children. Both families are enumerated in 12th District of
Walker County. We have found no record of John W. and Arminta Sandlin and
their family in the 1860 and 1870 census. They are listed in the 1880 census
in what is believed to be the same location (only now it is Blount County) as
in 1850. Maybe they were just missed in 1860 and 1870. The 1870 census has
more errors than most census, probably because of the hard times after the
war or maybe the family moved somewhere else for some years. I have other
families that had to prove they the family had lived on their land during
those years.
I have spent 30 years trying to place my great grandmother Lavina (Vinnie)
Sandlin Freeman in the Sandlin family. We are now positive that John and
Arminta Sandlin are the parents. We are still trying to prove the parentage
of John W. Sandlin and also we have conflicting information on Arminta's last
name -- Garrison, Stricklin and Daniel. John W. Sandlin stated in the 1867
Voter Registration and Loyalty oath that he was born in 1824 in York
District, SC.
Is there anyone out that can add anything new to this family? It is good to
hear from all you cousins.
