Compatriots:
The election is still not resolved, but one thing is certain. Once again
the group that asserted itself and got out the highest percentage vote was
Black Americans.
Throughout history no one has been more maligned...and still done more for
their country. Go to the Medal of Honor web pages at
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm and look at "World War II Black Medal of
Honor Recipients." Here is one of the citations:
Private George Watson
General Order:
"Citation: For extraordinary heroism in action on 8 March 1943. Private
Watson was on board a ship which was attacked and hit by enemy bombers. When
the ship was abandoned, Private Watson, instead of seeking to save himself,
remained in the water assisting several soldiers who could not swim to reach
the safety of the raft. This heroic action, which subsequently cost him his
life, resulted in the saving of several of his comrades. Weakened by his
exertions, he was dragged down by the suction of the sinking ship and was
drowned. Private Watson's extraordinarily valorous actions, daring
leadership, and self-sacrificing devotion to his fellow-man exemplify the
finest traditions of military service."
During the American Revolution over 5000 Blacks fought valiantly. Go to the
Florida Society website at http://www.flssar.org and then to the Caloosa
Chapter which will direct you to several websites with a lot of information
about "Blacks in the American Revolution." Much of what they have done is
forever lost because a concerted effort was made to erase them and what they
did forever from our history .
We have recently made an extraordinary effort to sign up Prince William of
England to be a Compatriot. If he is descended from an American Patriot,
fine.
In fairness, what we should be doing is to make an equally concerted effort
to find the descendants of our Black Patriots and encourage them to become
members of the SAR.
It is the right thing to do.
Fraternally,
Dick Fowler, Webmaster, Florida Society, SAR
