An interesting point that was not included on the DAR
marker noting George Washington's three visits to Fort
Pitt (see the 2nd link below), is that he was the
guest of Col. George Croghan at Croghan Hall. Croghan
at the time was Sir William Johnson's Deputy
Superintendent of Indian Affairs, and an investor with
GW and Franklin in the Ohio Company. When war appeared
imminent Croghan was appointed chairman of the Fort
Pitt Committee of Correspondence in 1775, and later
took the oath of fidelity in Philadelphia in April,
1778. At one point he was the largest landholder in
Pennsylvania, next to the Penn family. He and GW had a
falling out over a land dispute in 1782, and he was
placed on a list of attainders for alleged treason. He
was quickly cleared by a court, but never recovered
from the charge and the endless litigation surrounding
his land patents. He has only recently been approved
by NSSAR as a patriot ancestor.
