Thank you letting me join your list...I have been trying to prove the parents of Berryman (just called Berry)Saunders for about 17 years..Each time I think I have it correct something comes to disprove (never prove)..
Berryman Saunders was born near Vernon, Hickman County, Tenn 12 June 1813 (this is in his bible) However the writing is very faint and the three could be a five. According to info on his gravestone he died ( 23 Dec 1884) after so many years, months and days which would indicate he was born in 1815. He m. first Elizabeth "Betsy" Tubbs, daughter of Samuel Tubbs..(when and where?) The Tubbs moved from Tumbling Creek, Hickman Co (later it was in Humphreys Co) to Attala Co, Miss where the only "known" child of the marriage to Betsy was born in July, 1837..I have been told by another researcher that Betsy died in 1842. ( I find no proof of date).
Berry returned to Hickman Co Tenn (when?) and m. second to Naomi T. Williams of Whitfield, Hickman County, Tenn on 25 Oct 1846.. Their first two children were b. at Vernon , Hickman Co and then the family moved to Beardstown, Perry Co. Tenn. Seven more children were born in Perry Co. About 6 years ago we located his family cemetery and restored it.
It was first believed Berryman was the son of James Saunders/Sanders (son of Jesse and Ann Yancey Saunders) however James m. Levisa Bowen Oct 1813 and lived in Sumner Co...Berry always lived very near James' children even when they moved to Miss..
It is now believed that Berry is the son of James' brother, Thomas, who d. ca 1832 in Humphreys Co...Again no proof.
Is anyone researching Thomas Saunders, son of Jesse Saunders? Or anyone researching the children of Jesse Saunders?
Any help would be appreciated as there are many garbled accounts....e.g. one g-granddaughter has given info to the LDS that Berryman's name was Barry.. Her reason being that" there was no such name as Berry"...Another has Elizabeth Tubbs listed as Naomi Elizabeth Tubbs..Neither are true and adds to the confusion..Another theory is that Berryman was illigetimate...Even if that was true he would still belong to someone!!! And usually with court records to establish it...
He definitely is in that branch of Saunders somewhere but where?????
