Hi there,

The name Thirbaul came from the obituary of John Gottlieb Maetzold in July of 1889. According to this obituary it states he was born in Thirbaul, Saxony; immigrated in 1849 and settled in Town 9 near Milwaukee: in 1856 he came with his family to Carver County and settled in Laketown (in MN). My g.g.grandfather is William Maetzold and I believe he is the brother of this John. William was born on April 21, 1837 in saxony and immigrated in 1854. He too, settled near Milwaukee and than served three years in the later part of the war. After the war, he also went to Laketown in Carver County. So, I think the two are related somehow.

In the three census's I have for William, all list Saxony as birth place for William and his parents. For John, one lists Saxony, another lists Prussia.

That is what I have.

Paula
