Paula, the Civil War Pension Index indicates that William's widow Mathilda filed for both an Invalid's and a Widow's Pension in 1888. I know first-hand, Paula, that those Civil War pension files are FULL of ALL KINDS of information! Do you live anywhere at all near a branch of the National Archives where you could go and apply for a copy of these records? If you live near Washington, D.C., you can go to the National Archives there and look at the original records yourself. But if you don't, you can go to any of the regional branches of the National Archives and fill out a form that they will send to Washington and Washington will then photocopy and send to you the contents of both pension files.
Robert
