Subject: [SC-CEN] Using the 1790 SC Census Page
Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 13:03:44 -0800 (PST)
Hey Everyone
I have gotten several request for help with using the 1790 Census page and I
thought the best solution was to send this to the list rather than sending
it out to each individual who has inquired about it. So here goes my best
take on how to use these page :)
1790 SC Census Page
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/sca_1790.html
>From the Surnames Index look up what ever name you are interested in finding
in the census.Follow along with this Example if you look up Thomas Purkins
In the index he is listed as
"Purkins, Thomas, 77"
The 77 refers to the page number he is on. You then take the page number
and look for the District containing the page 77 from the District Listings.
The District Listings are listed immediately after the Surname index table.
You should look in the Handwritten Image Files as this is a copy of the
actual census page which the index refers to. In this case it would be
Ninety Sixth District in the County of Newberry Since Newberry contains the
pp. 51-78. If this had been in actual book for you would only have had to
look at page 77 and you would have seen it was in the Newberry section on
the Ninety Sixth Dist. Note from the column headings of the District
Listings that some have been Transcribed--for example Clarendon, pp. 207-217
Then click on the link for page 77 (077.gif) which is located in the Box
adjacent to the Newberry column. Then you will see the actual page 77 of
the SC Census which contains the Newberry Co of the Ninety Sixth District
and the entry for Thomas Purkins(located about a 1/3 of the way down the
page.)If there had been a transcription of this particular District you
might want to also check the text transcription file as well.

household
Column two is Free white males under 16
