Article Title: The Daily South Carolinian

Article Date: June 10 1864

Article Description: Obituary of William Preston WESCOAT.

Article Text:

It becomes my said duty to record the death of Serg't Wm. Preston WESCOAT, of the "Palmetto Guards," 2d Regiment S.C.V., who perished in the late battle of the Wilderness. Thus has a noble son of this State gone down to death, a sacrifice on the altar of his country. To his bereaved family, his loss is irreparable. Be comforted, relatives! "He is not dead, but sleepeth." Endowed with remarkable talents, he was capable of adorning any station in public life. By his self-sacrificing patriotism, he has added his name to the bright galaxy of heroes whose names are recorded upon our country's history, and whose fame will be as lasting as monumental brass. When the tocsin of war sounded, he was among the first who gave themselves, heart and hand, to the Confederacy. He has been for three years, without intermission, in the tented field. He participated in every battle fought in Virginia; also, in the battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge--in all of which he served w!
ith conspicuous gallantry. He had become endeared to his companions-in-arms by his affability, his modesty and his indomitable courage, which always made him foremost in a fight. "Thus sink the brave to rise no more." After passing through so many hard-contested fields, it seems hard for him to be taken from our midst; but "the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord." Truly are the ways of Divine Providence inscrutable. It is a consolation to know that he died a Christian. "Oh! death, where is thy sting? Oh! grave, where is thy victory?" He has been released from the stern realities of the present, to "Ascend to the blessed realms above,
Where nothing reigns but bliss and love."

He fell in the van, nobly discharging his duties. He died in the service of his country, another martyr for Southern independence.
