Don't get hung up on the district/county thing. From 1800-1868 they were
called districts but their purpose and function is what you think of as a
county.
See the map at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~johnrobertson/ashley/abbebdry.htm
for the changed boundaries of Abbeville District/County it shows
1785/1897/1916 with comparison to modern counties of
Abbeville/Greenwood/McCormick.

Can anyone tell me exactly what territory the 1860 Abbeville Census would
encompass? From the postings it appears that Abbeville wasn't a county until
after the civil war. So was it 1860 Abbeville (Judicial)District census? I'm
considering buying an 1860 Abbeville Census, but not certain what it will
contain.

In1868, all the "Districts" were renamed "Counties" so Abbeville District
became Abbeville County again. Therefore, the date of the event determines
whether Abbeville was officially a District or County.
