I'm hoping that someone on the list have an opinion about using an
external hard drive with a USB connection such as the Buslink hard
drives, as a backup medium for photos. Mostly I see that people are
using CD-R's for backup, which involves handling multiple disks. If
anyone is using an external hard drive, are you using a backup software
to transfer the files or using a simple copy/paste operation. I've been
attempting to do regular backups to a Buslink hard drive for photos
scanned with a Visoneer Scanner using the latest Paperport 8.0 software
on a new Dell computer with Windows XP. I've used Retrospect 5.6 backup
software and as an alternative, the copy/paste command, but find that
with the external hard drive the transfer process locks up at different
random image files. The external hard drive has been back to the factory
for evaluation, with no problems reported, and other files seem to save
successfully. So, I starting to think the problem may be file size and
USB transfer rates. Paperport stores images in a propriety .max file
format and I have successfully saved the very same images to Zip disks
and CDs, but thought it would be simpler to work with a single external
hard drive that could hold everything. Apparently not. Any
observations, suggestions, or advice on using external hard drives as a
backup medium, or on the nature of the problem I'm having, will be much
appreciated.
