I am researching my great, great grandfather Allen F. Free and Julianna Rush family.

Allen F. Free, b. 15 August 1827, in Barnwell District, S.C., d. 24 July 1899, in Bamberg County, S.C., son of Jacob Free, d. 1828, in Barnwell District. S.C. & his 2nd wife Lacy Morris, daughter of Phillp Morris of the old Barnwell District, S.C. (Present day Bamberg County, S.C.) He married Julianna Rush, daughter of John William Rush and Elizabeth Jane Daniels. Allen F. Free, m. 2nd wife Arrie W. Hungerford.
They are all buried in the Springtown Baptist Church Cemetery, Springtown Community, Bamberg County, S.C.
Birth and death dates were taken from their tombstone by me.

Allen F. Free was suppose to have been a Captain in the Civil War, I have never been able to find which company that he fought in. His brother Captain Jacob Edmunds Free did fight in the war. I have his records.

After the war, Allen F. Free served as Barnwell County Treasurer until July 6, 1997. His son "Lige", I believe, was appointed in his place.

Allen and Julianna Free's children were:

1. Elija D. "Lige" Free, m. Caroline Annie "Carrie" Dowling.
They had a number of children. I have the names of the spouces of these children but no further information.

2. Free Free, m. Dixie Hooten

3. Horace Daniel Free, m. bef. 1902 to Minnie Estelle Gerald. After his death she m. his brother Jacob Edmunds Free

4. Walter Free, m. Maria (Birthname unknown).

5. Anna Eliza Free, b. 20 August 1849, in the Barnwell District, S.C., d. 23 Deember 1907, in Bamberg County, S.C., m. William Bowers Kittrell.

6. Jacob Edmunds Free, b. 1854, d. 1893, m the widow of his brother, Mrs. Minnie Estelle Gerald Free.

7. Allen Julius Free, b. 9 May 1857, d. 9 June 1858, buried in Springtown Baptist Church Cemetery, Springtown Community, Bamberg County, S.C.

8. Jane Elizabeth Ray, b. 22 September 1858, in Barnwell District, S.C., d. 2 September 1920, m. Captain Henry Martin Ulmer. I recently obtained some additional information on this family.

9. Lewis Rush Free, b. 13 August 1863, d. 23 December 1937. He m. (1) on 15 May 1884 to Maude Oakman, in Orangeburg County, S.C. by the Rev. Mr. Golphin. He m. (2) Anna Eliza Oakman, sister of his 1st wife.

10. Julia Adeline Free, my great-grandmother, b. 16 July 1864, died 18 November 1948, in Bamberg County, S.C., buried in Springtown Baptist Church Cemetery, Springtown Community, Bamberg County, S.C. She married Fitzhugh McMaster Ray, son of Captain Hughey Medicus Ray and Narcissa Josephine Bowers. All are buried in the Springtown Baptist Church Cemetery.

11. Henry J. Free, b. 1875, d. 1919, buried in the Springtown Baptist Church Cemetery, m. Allie Dowling. I assume Henry died before I was born, but I did know Aunt Allie. She was one of my mother's favorite aunts.

Allen F. Free, m. his 2nd wife Arrie W. Hungerford. She is buried at Springtown Baptist Church Cemetery. He is buried between his two wives.
He and Arrie had two children. I believe that these children moved to Georgia.
