Audrey, I've been working on this line over 25 years and considering I started with Mason Lang Mosley's Bible I haven't progressed back very far.
It took me almost 24 years to get people to even believe there was a Mason Mosley in Edgefield. You see Mason is not listed BY NAME on any census. Information at his death states he had aged parents and a young wife. Their ONLY child was born after Mason died. I have a copy of a grant he recieved for 1,000 acres from Edgefield in Sept of 1804. It looks like Mason was born about 1774-1777 from census records that seem to be him living with William and Sarah. He probably married shortly after receiving the grant, say early 1805. He would have been about 27. His son Mason Lang Mosley married at 26 and that seems to have been a common age for men to marry. Mary An would have conceived about the end of March 1806 according to when the son was born. So that also points to a marriage about 1805 or very early 1806. Not marrying till 1805 would account for Mason not being on the 1800 census as a head of household, even though he was probably about 23 at that time. Since he died in J!
uly of
1806 he was dead long before the 1810 census.
I have never seen a will for Mason d 1806 or the William Moseley who died in 1812 (William d 1812, not Sarah as it appears from my earlier e-mail) Edgefield/Barnwell. Many of William's children named one of their sons Mason from 1802 through 1808 therefore there is a lot of confusion between them. And William d 1812 seems to have had a son William also married to a Sarah which has complicated things more.
I am hoping that the recently discovered files in Edgefield will yield a will or other papers for William or Mason or some other document.
There is also a petition pertaining to the murder filed by wife Mary An for compensation from the SC legislature. James Mosley was one of the witnesses who signed the petition. It was rejected as Mason was not on active duty when he was trying to capture the runaway??? The writing of the name Mason sort of looks like Major instead. Don't know if they were confused by the way the s and n were written or if Mason was a Major or some sort.
I'm currently trying to pin down the Uncle John from the 1834 deed to Beverly Rogers. I figure for Mason to have gotten a share of Uncle John's land John probably had to die young too or at least with no heirs so his part went to his siblings.
All help appreciated.

Hi Carolyn,
Looks like you've done some extensive research. I see Wm MOSLEY in
Granville, NC early, 1752-53, but no will for this name. Meaning, of
course, that they probably moved on. So many of the Southside VA families
went across the line into Granville, NC, sometimes back and forth. Anyway,
I guess Wm could connect with those in the wills sent...?
I've never seen a Mason MOSLEY, but haven't really looked either. There are
books published on the MOSELY families of VA. There is a man in Fresno, if
he is still alive, whose wife has this line...he had the books also, but
haven't seen him in years.
Off to Fresno today. As ever, Audrey
