Date: Sun, 16 Feb 2003 21:19:11 -0500
This portion of the Gignilliat lookup was too long to include in the
first reply since the source requires some explanation.
>From # 207 and # 296
[Note: "It is believed that no complete list of the French Refugees
has ever been published; probably none has been compiled. This list,
with that in Ramsay's "History of South Carolina," and that in the act
of 1696, will probably afford the names of most, if not all, of the
class of settlers who made this State their asylum immediately after
the revocation of the Edict of Nantez." This was written by "A
Descendant of the Refugees" [Theodore Gaillard Thomas?]. The list is
judged to have been compiled between 1694 and 1695 by Daniel Ravenel
from "among sundry old papers. [found]. . at the plantation known as
Wantoot, in St. John's, Berkley, which had been the residence of my
father and grandfather. It is not a general list of the Refugees; it
purports to be a list of such as desired an Act of Naturalization . .
.To the names of persons on the list are added their places of
nativity, their parentage, the persons they married, the children born
before, and those born after, their arrival in Carolina; and the
mothers and wives are, with few exceptions, mentioned by their maiden
names [note: let me know if you want to know why]." . . "The
manuscript [by Daniel Ravenel] occupies seventeen pages" . . .The
portions are: The principal List, numbered from 1 to 119 inclusive,
which is the list published in 1822 [the Southern Intelligencer]; The
portion marked No. 2, purporting to be names of persons at Orange
Quarter . . . ; The portion marked No. 3, which has been, and is now,
supposed to consist of notes used in the compiling the principal list;
and this formed the envelope of all the sheets and is endorsed "List
des Francois et Suisses." ]
Liste
Des Francois et Suisses Refugies en Caroline qui souhaitent d'etre
naturalizes Anglois.
[this portion of the List, 61-119, are the inhabitants of Santee]
Liste des habitants de Santee.
[Note: "The names with an asterisk (*) have the word Fridenizons or
Fridenize in the margin of the manuscript . . .These notes refer, no
doubt, to grants of civil privileges from the Lords Proprietors, or
from the King." . . .]
