I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL HELP BUT.....In "Cities and Towns of Early South
Carolina" by H.A.M. Smith there is listed under early grants for lots in
Charles Town a RICHARD PHILLIPS who received a grand for lot 243& 244 on
June 24, 1694(found on page 50). Then in Beaufort lot 176 was granted to
JAMES PHILIPS on Oct. 20, 1765. There was also a JAMES PHILLIPS who
arrived in the Province in 1680 and had a grant for 150 acres as found in
"Rivers and Regions of Early South Carolina" also by H.A.M. Smith.

This doesn't answer you question but it might be of interest.
