What is your source for this information about George Chicken, Jr. and
Childsbury? Strawberry Chapel and the cemetery do still exist but Catherine
married Benjamin Simons III and lived at Middleburg. They are both buried
at Pompion Hill Chapel next door to Middleburg. George Chicken I was one of
the "Goose Creek Men."
From Michael Heitzler's new book,GOOSE CREEK, A definitive History is the
following:
" George Chicken, planter, and militia leader, was an assigned Native
American trader in Goose Creek. His plantation was situated on the Cherokee
Path and he had long been involved in the trade." pg. 50
"George Chicken lived most of his latter years on Tradd Street." pg.76
"Pine Grove and Spring Grove Plantations were contiguous properties located
on the headwaters of the Back River west of Back River Plantation and
Medway. These plantations were developed on land that earlier supported the
Chicken Family. The lord proprietors first granted a parcel of this land in
1705 to Thomas Bellamy. The initial grant was small, but it was followed
with a 1,050 acre grant the next year to Catherine Bellamy, widow of Thomas.
This large grant encompassed most of the propertythat composed all or parts
of the four tracts and some of which was originally part of Henry Smith's
large grant.
George Chicken acquired the land when he immigrated to South Carolina, and
married Catherine Bellamy.....................George and Catherine reared
five children, one of which was George II who inherited the plantation and
lived there with his wife, Lydia and daughter, Catherine(Little Mistress
Chicken)." pg 248-249
Mayor Heitzler's book is a thoroughly researched book. Volume One,
Planters, Politicians and Patriots is available from the Goose Creek
Administration Building. Volume Two should be out soon. There is quite a
bit on information on the Wassamasaw in his books.
