Subject: [SCCOLLET] The Bad Trans Virus- From List Admin

Hi, Everyone,

Typically, I wouldn't encourage virus alerts on RootsWeb mailing lists, but since this new version of the Bad Trans virus is wreaking havoc, I think I have to say something. I haven't been able to receive e-mail for the last 24 hours and have just caught up on my (200+) messages on the web. I don't think I saw anything from the SC lists, but I have from TN and CT.

There is a concern that the mailing lists themselves are spreading the virus. In a way, that is true, because this virus spreads by sending itself to the senders of all unread messages in the infected computer's e-mail program. Since RootsWeb filters out not only virus messages but any attachments, I don't believe the RW computer is the culprit.

All that being said, this is a very bad virus that is spreading like wildfire. It's arrived in my mailbox no fewer than fifty times this week. Norton Anti Virus does catch it. I would suggest you read up on this one and make sure your anti-virus software is updated regularly. You can find links to McAfee and Symantec (Norton) on this page: http://www.patsabin.com/etiquette.htm

This virus arrives with no subject line, so don't even preview a message that fits this description. Better yet, turn off your preview option. There are others that seem to be making a comeback right now, too, so just be really careful!
