Hello,
One Slave Family - the Descendants of Mike & Phoebe - are traced specifically in Donald Stone's book - Fallen Prince - a story about William James Edwards & Snow Hill Institute.
Phoebe - the Matriarch of this slave family was owned by Thomas David Rumph. Phoebe walked from Abbeville, SC - pregnant / with her other seven children in tow - when Rumph moved his plantation in 1820-21.
Mike - Phoebe's husband was owned by someone else in Abbeville - stayed behind for 4 years - WORKING to purchase his freedom. He finally came to Alabama in 1825.
Mike & Phoebe's children were: Eliza - born in 1812; Mike - born in 1813; Joseph - born in 1815; James - born in 1817; Fanny -born in 1818; Peter - born in 1818; Isaac - born in 1819; Patty - born in 1821; George - born in 1826; Daniel - born in 1827; and Peggy - born in 1828.
The Descendants of Mike & Phoebe completed their family reunion in early July at Tuskegee University.
We are now well into generation #10
Lots of information to share - though I don't know about other slaves who might have been owned by Rumph - Mike & Phoebe's descendants took the name "Carmichael" - I'm not really sure why - I surmised that perhaps Mike's owner could have been named Carmichael - there was an adjacent plantation owned by a Carmichael family.
I am in the process of researching that.
There were other "Rumphs" who remained in South Carolina - specifically at Branchville Plantation - close to Abbeville.
Thomas David Rumph had many relatives in that area.
Let me know how I can help.
