Harry-
In a message dated 98-06-21 12:36:25 EDT, you write:
<< Third, we know from another land record dated 1736, see below, that Charles
appeared to have some children prior to the records of the church registry
previously mentioned. Assuming this to be our Charles Windham, it suggests he
has up to six family members, but some could include slaves. This is for 1736,
so of those children identified as belonging to Charles from the church
registry, only Mary would have been born at this time. This gives room for
John, Patience and William being children of Charles, since they would have
been too young to live alone at that time. Four children and 2 adults make 6!
We know Charles had slaves from other land records, but those were much older
than this one, so it is likely Charles did not own slaves in 1736 (this early
in his life).

I will limit my discussion to Charles Windham at this time. There are two
times that a Charles Windham are mention in the Council Journals prior to
1756......
Friday 12 November 1736.....
"Read the petition of Charles Windon setting forth that he has Six persons in
Family as appears on Oath and praying 300 acres of Land in a Township.
Ordered that a Warrant of Survey issue to the Petitioner for 300 acres and a
Town Lott in Kingston Township."
Tuesday 5 March 1754
"The Petition of Charles Windham humbly setting forth That the Petitioner hath
been some time in the Country and being Disappointed of several Places that he
would have purchased and being desireous to settle himself on Pedee River and
having a Family a Wife and three Children and one negro for whom nor yet for
himself hath any Land been granted in this province, prays to lay out 300
acres of Land on Pedee or the waters thereof so that he may have a grant for
the same......The prayer thereof was granted."
Present-day Conway is where Kingston was once located.
