James B. Gray
PAMPLICO -- James Bryan Gray, 83, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in a Florence
hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at
Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. James was born in Latta, son of the late
Jennings Bryan and Elsie Berry Gray. Surviving are his wife, Mamie Cole Gray
of Florence; a daughter, Mary E. (James) Richburg; four sons, Martin D.
Gray, Lewis B. (Peggy) Gray, Howard E. (Julie) Gray and James B. (Maria)
Gray; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ferguson of Florence; and a brother,
Billy Gray of Gastonia, N.C.
Mr. Gray attended Timmonsville High School and Clemson before entering the
Navy where he served in both World War II and the Korean conflict. After the
war he relocated to Boston where he received a teaching fellowship in
microbiology at Harvard Medical School. Three years later he accepted a
position as microbiologist with Massachusetts Department of Public Health
from which he retired and returned to his native Florence.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Floyd
David Hager Chemistry Scholarship Fund, c/o Wachovia Bank, 408 S. Irby St.,
Florence, 29501 Attn. Ann Smith.
