FLORENCE — Lt. Col. Charles Gerald DuBose, formerly of Columbia, died Friday,
January 19, 2007 at the age of 95. He was born April 25, 1911 in the Cypress
Community of Lee County, SC. He was the son of the late Charles B. DuBose,
Sr. and Martha Melissa (Mattie) Parnell DuBose. Services will be conducted at
Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia on Sunday, January 21
at 3:00 P.M. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the
church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park located at 845 Leesburg
Road in Columbia. Richardson Funeral Home of Marion is in charge of
arrangements.
He graduated from Lamar High School in 1929, Wofford College in 1934, and in
1939 was awarded a Masters Degree from Duke University. He taught school in
McColl, Baron Dekalb, Union, and Columbia.
In February 1941 he was called to active duty in the US Army. Enroute to
China he visited cities in Australia, Ceylon, India, and Burma. He was assigned
to the CBI and was in China at the end of World War II.
In 1946 he was married to Martha McDaniel in Washington Street United
Methodist Church, which he joined in 1939. She died in 1978.
After a 3? year tour at Western Maryland College, Westminister, MD, his next
assignment was in Germany. In 1956 orders sent him to Korea, later to Japan
and Hawaii. His next assignment was at Fort Jackson, where he retired in 1961.

Among his decorations were the Combat Infantry Badge, The Bronze Star, The
American Defense Ribbon, The Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, The World War II Victory
Ribbon, and the Army Commendation Ribbon.
After retirement he taught English at AC Flora High School from 1961-1975.
The 1966 AC Flora Annual was dedicated to him as Teacher of the Year. He
retired in 1975.
In 1980 he married Daphne Muldrow of Bishopville. She died February 13, 1999.

He is survived by his son C. (Guerry) DuBose, Jr. of Arlington, VA, stepsons,
George (Charlotte) Muldrow of Marion, SC and John Henry (Ernie) Muldrow of
Lynchburg, SC; stepdaughters, Frances (Tom) Gressette of Florence, SC and
Daphne Dickerson of Florence, SC; step-grandchildren and
step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by seven brothers, Charles DuBose of Summerville, SC, Fred
DuBose of Cyprus Community, Ray DuBose of Dillon, SC, Ronald DuBose of Mt.
Pleasant, SC and Sinclair DuBose of Cypress Community, Max DuBose of
Bishopville, SC, and James Earl DuBose of Cypress Community. Three sisters, Marjorie
Hicks of Concord, NC, Dorothy Rogers of Camden, SC, and Winnie DuBose of
Cypress Community.
Memorials may be made to Washington Street United Methodist Church, 1401
Washington St., Columbia, SC 29291, or the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, 2100
Twin Church Road, Florence, SC 29501.
