MARION — Roy Edwin Ed Pittman, died May 12, 2007, following a long battle
with Parkinsons Disease.
Born on February 24, 1925, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Belle
Moody Pittman of Dillon County, South Carolina.
Mr. Pittman graduated from Lake View High School in 1943 and served in the
U.S. Navy on the submarine, USSManta during World War II. Following the war he
attended Mars Hill College and graduated from Clemson College in 1950 with a
degree in Agriculture.
Mr. Pittman joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home
Administration where he worked for almost 40 years. His career with the FmHA began in
Marion County, followed by Darlington, Dillon and Florence Counties.
Subsequently, he became Chief of Community Programs and in 1980 was appointed State
Director of the Farmers Home Administration for South Carolina.
Mr. Pittman received several awards for his contributions to rural South
Carolina, among which was the Order of the Palmetto. He received an award from
the South Carolina House of Representatives for Development contributions and
three awards from the Secretary of Agriculture for special achievement. A
Master Mason and past Master of the Blue Lodge 142 A.F.M., a Shriner, past
president of the Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club and an active member of the Marion
Lions Club, Mr. Pittman was also a long time member of IPTAY.
He served for 20 years as a member of the board of directors of the Palmetto
Trust Federal Credit Union and was past president of the Columbia Federal
Executive Council. He served as vice president of the board of the South
Carolina Rural Rehabilitation and several terms on the Marion County Economic
Development Board. Mr. Pittman was an active member of the Davis Landing Club.
A member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, he served as a lay
reader, on the official board and at one time, a trustee. Prior to becoming a
Methodist, he was a deacon at Holland Avenue Baptist Church, West Columbia
and Bermuda Baptist Church, Dillon.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Marian Dickens Pittman, a son, Roy E.
(Eddie) Pittman and his wife, Pattie of Mullins, S.C., and a daughter, Marsha
and son-in-law, Knox White of Greenville, S.C. Also, two brothers, Everette
Pittman and his wife, Betty, of Marion and Billy Pittman and his wife Margie of
Dillon along with 5 grandchildren, Alex, Ed, and Lee Pittman and Marian and
Knox White, Jr.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Marion, S.C. on
Tuesday, May 15 at 11:00, with burial following in Greenlawn Cemetery near
Dillon, S.C. Visitation will be Monday May 14th from 7:00-9:00 at Richardson
Funeral Home, Marion, S.C.

Hospice of Florence and to Corrine Israel.
