DILLON - Lela Hinson Travis, 80, of Dillon, South Carolina, died Saturday,
March 29, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC after an illness. Lela Travis was
born in Hallsboro, NC, on November 6, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Lourie Abigile Hinson and the wife of the late Ross McElwee Travis,
Sr.
Mrs. Travis was a graduate of Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, and was
employed for several years as a bookkeeper by American Finance. In 1950, she
married and, when the children were born, she chose to remain at home to care
for them. In 1973, she and her husband moved their family to Dillon, SC, to
take over her uncle's business, Winesett's. The name was changed to Winsome's
and finally Travis Jewelers. The people of Dillon loved working and visiting
with "Miss Lela". She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a
member of the choir and attended Dixie Langston's Sunday School class. She was a
member of Helen Quick's WMU Circle. Mrs. Travis was a member of the Garden
Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Saint Eugene's (McLeod of Dillon)
Hospital Auxiliary. More recently, Lela lived with her daughter in Raleigh,
NC. While there, she attended Hayes Barton United Methodist Church and was a
member of the Chapel Choir and the Cameron Sunday School class.
Mrs. Travis lived life to its fullest, always wanting to be on the giving end
of any situation. She had a passion for children and spent her life involved
in the care and nurturing of many precious little ones. Lela also had a love
for baseball and she enjoyed cheering on her Atlanta Braves!
Mrs. Travis was married to her beloved husband, Ross, for 33 years. She is
survived by her three children, Ross McElwee "Mac" (Janice) Travis, Jr. of
Durham, NC, Ellen Gail Travis (Bobby) Beddingfield of Raleigh, NC, and William
Augustus "Bill", (Jackie) Travis, III, of Florence, SC. She is also survived by
five grandchildren, Benjamin Ross Travis of Maumee, OH, Alan James (Carrie)
Travis of Suffolk, VA, Kathryn Elaine (Elliott) Beddingfield of Greensboro,
NC, Sarah Elizabeth Travis and William "Andrew" Travis, both of Florence, SC.
She was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Matthew Ross Travis and
William Austin Travis. She had many nephews and nieces who loved her dearly.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 until 8 pm at Cooper
Funeral Home in Dillon, SC. Funeral services will be at 2 pm, Tuesday, April
1, at First Baptist Church, followed by a burial at Greenlawn Cemetery, both
in Dillon, SC. On Wednesday at 1pm, there will be a Memorial Service in her
honor at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the "Wee Care" program (a
project focused on teaching and nurturing underprivileged two year old children)
at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, PO Box 6088, Raleigh, NC 27628-6088.
