DILLON — Hoyt Jackson, 84, died April 11, 2008, at Regency Hospital,
Florence, after an illness. He was born Dec. 7, 1923, in Dillon County. He was the
son of the late Shelley (Shell) Jackson and Lila Belle Dillon Jackson. He was
the widower of the late Francina White Jackson, his wife of 65 years. Mr.
Jackson was born and raised in Dillon County, having been a great, great nephew
of James W. Jackson, the founder of Dillon County. He spent his entire life in
the wholesale/retail grocery business, and was also involved in the farming
business.
He served in the S.C. Defense Force during WWII, and was also a Civil Defense
Air Raid Warden.
Mr. Jackson was an active member of The First Baptist Church in Dillon for
the past 53 years, where he served on various committees. He was a faithful
worker and attended regularly until his health declined.
He was a Mason and member of Mackey Lodge 77 for 50 years. He was also a
50-year member of the Woodmen of the World. He was a bus agent for Southeastern
Stages and an agent for Western Union for 25 years.
Mr. Jackson was also interested in politics, having served as a Dillon County
Commissioner (now known as County Councilman) for a number of years.
Mr. Jackson was a fine businessman and a pillar of the community. He will be
greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving Mr. Jackson are daughters Judy (Kenneth) Stephens and Jerri
(Edward) Hayes-Edwards, both of Dillon; five grandchildren, MAJ Ted (Marli)
Stephens of Deridder, Louisiana and Baghdad, Iraq; Teresa Stephens of Dillon; Mike
(Dana) Hayes of Dillon; Ashley Hayes of Mt. Pleasant; and Chad Hayes of Johns
Island, and five great, great grandchildren, Claudia Stephens and Maggie
Stephens, of Deridder, La.; Michael Hayes of Myrtle Beach; Ethan and Jackson
Hayes of Dillon.
Also surviving Mr. Jackson are sisters, Hazel Stephens of North Myrtle Beach
and Amanda Hardwick of Floydale; and a brother, Bishop Jackson of Conover,
N.C.
Mr. Jackson was predeceased by his sisters, Clara Harrelson, Loretta Jackson
and Juanita Wiggins; and brothers, Horace, Leroy and Harold Gene.
Visitation will be at Cooper Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 13.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church on Monday,
April 14. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Dillon,
SC.
