Jane,
I have also been sent that same virus, perhaps thirty times in the last
twenty-four hours. (As you said, I never open .exe files, so I think my
computer avoided infection.) I'm sending this to the list, though I know
it's off-topic, for the same reason you did: in the hope it will help
someone.
My email-attachment copies of "happy99" came from friends, who certainly did
not intend me any harm and did not deliberately send the virus. This virus
sends itself; it apparently sends a copy (or more than one copy) to every
person in the email address of the infected computer.
You seem to indicate that the person from whose computer you received the
virus has recently communicated with you. That means you were probably on
record in his/her address book, and that is why you got a copy. No doubt
this unfortunate person's mother, best friend, boss, or anybody else in
his/her address book also got a copy of "happy99." I hope you will
re-consider the idea that it was deliberately sent to you. None of the
multiple copies I got were or really could have been deliberately sent; the
virus apparently is travelling on its own.
Since I've taken this opportunity to address you, I want to tell you how
much I appreciate all your good work. We all owe you a great deal.
Julia Long
