Walter Murray
ST. GEORGE - Services for Walter Thomas "Gator" Murray, 81, of 3167 Wire Rd.,
will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in St. Matthews Baptist Church with Rev. Ray
Metts and Rev. Bob Frederick officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray
Cemetery, Grover. Visitation will be 6-8 this evening at Bryant Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Jody Creel, James Marvin Creel, Bill Colson, Deral
Colson, Ricky Colson and Lynn Creel. Honorary Pallbearers will be Johnny
Shieder, Lawton Shieder, Monroe Shieder, Elton Garris, Luder Behling, Furman
Harbeson, Grady Murray, Mendel Colson, Carl Byrd, D. W. Murray, Jr., William
Compter and Max Dukes. Memorials may be made to St. Matthews Baptist Church
Building Fund, 2593 Wire Road, St. George, SC 29477; or Hospice of
Charleston, 3896 Lees Ave., N. Charleston, SC 29405. Bryant Funeral Home is
in charge.
Mr. Murray died Monday at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Bon
(sic) April 30, 1919, in Grover, he was a son of the late William Koger
Murray and Annie Infinger Murray. He was retired from the Pipefitters Union
Local 470 and was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church and Grover Hunting
Club. He served in the 118th Infantry, 30th Division U.S. Army in Iceland,
England, France and Germany. Battles he fought in were in northern France and
Rhineland. He was awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge, the American Defense
Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Eamet Campaign Medal with two
Bronze Stars.
Surviving are his loving wife of 34 years, Irene Folk Murray of St. George;
daughters and son-in-law, Becky K. and Jerry White, Donna K. Burkett, all of
Dothan, Ala.; four grandchildren, Alexa B. Hough of Lewisville, Texas, Kyndal
L. Burkett of Dothan, Pennye W. Eason of Donalsonville, Ga., Alan White of
Denver, Colo.; great grandchildren, Julianna M. Hough of Lewisville, Hannah,
Emily Eason of Donalsonville.
