Are there any descendants of John Lewis Gavin out there? He was the son of John Gavin and Mary Shuler.
John Lewis Gavin was b. Oct. 8, 1849 in St. George; d. Nov. 23, 1916; buried St. George Cemetery. My information is that he was married twice:
First wife Anna Frederick Belhing, b. Dec. 11, 1855; d. May 9, 1893.
Second wife Caroline Catherine Behling, b. June 7, 1850 in St. George; d. Nov. 4, 1914. From this marriage are:
Carrie L. Gavin, b. 1878; Lewis E. Gavin, b. 1882, Wehme Gavin, b. 1887.
I'm interested in this family group for a variety of reasons. I am trying to gather more information on my great-great grandfather's life in Brazil after the Civil War. John Lewis Gavin is the only other family member who spent time in Brazil in the 1860's. I would be absolutely thrilled to come up with additional information on Charles Gavin's life in Brazil.
Second, I'd like to clarify the information I have on his marriage to the Behling sisters: If his children were from the second marriage, he must have been divorced from Anna? There is a letter from Charles Gavin to his daughter Annie that indicates that Anna Behling Gavin was rather mean and abusive.
Third, my grandmother was quite close to Wehme Gavin, and actually lived with this family as she attended school in Orangeburg.
