Migrants From Edgefield County, SC 1842-1852 by Louise M Dumont

Among the loose papers in the Office of the Clerk of the Probate Court,
Edgefield County, South Carolina, are 37 "powers of attorney" from heirs of
citizens of Edgefield County whose estate had not yet been settled. These heirs had
migrated south and west to six other states. Alabama had nearly half of them.
The counties in each state have been arranged alphabetically. To save space,
the phase "power of attorney" has been abbreviated to PA.

FLORIDA

ANN DESHAZA, Columbia Co., made her will Sept 1846 and left everything to her
daughter, CHARLOTTE CAROLYN CHAPMAN, wife of BENJAMIN CHAPMAN. The marriage
of BENJAMIN CHAPMAN and CHARLOTTE DESHAZA took place 10 July 1838 in Talledga
Co., Alabama. In 1851, CHARLOTTE CHAPMAN, Columbia Co., Fla., gave PA to M.L.
BONHAM, Edgefield Co., S.C. to collect CHARLOTTE'S share of estate of LUCY
JENNINGS, wife of PHIL JENNINGS, Edgefield Co., S.C. since CHARLOTTE was an heir.

JOHN W. MILLS and wife MARTHA ELVIRA, and WM. H. LUNN and wife JANE
ELIZABETH, all of Gadsden Co., gave PA to W.W. ADAMS, Edgefield Co., S.C. to collect
their interest in estate of WM. FERGUSON, decd, Edgefield Co., S.C. Nov 1851.

SEABORN O. SULLIVAN, Madison Co., heir of his sister ELLEN SULLIVAN, decd

FERGUSON, gave PA to W.W. ADAMS, Edgefield Co., S.C. to collect her share of

SPEER PARTAIN, Harris Co., gave PA to BENJAMIN E. PARTAIN, Harris Co. to
collect his share of estate of PHIL GINIS (sic) decd.; JOHN GINIS (sic),

ROBERT LUMMUSE and wife SARAH, Jasper Co., gave PA to son WILLIAM LUMMUSE,
Newton Co., Ga, to collect ROBERT'S interest in estate of WM. LEVI STEEL,
Edgefield Co., S.C. Feb 1842.

JAMES W. REYNOLDS and wife ELIZABETH, Meriwether Co., gave PA to ATTICUS
TUCKER, Edgefield Co. S.C. to collect his share of estate of ELIZABETH CLARK, Jan.
1851.

HARRIET GARRETT, widow of WILLIAM GARRETT, Walton Co., gave PA to son GEORGE
W. GARRETT, to settle up estate of WILLIAM GARRETT, land at Hamburg, Edgefield
Co., S.C. 1850. (see Clark Co., Ark.)

HIRAM JENNIGNS (sic), Wilkes Co. gave PA to BENJ. PARTAIN, Harris Co., GA.,
to get his share of PHILLIP JENNINGS estate in Edgefield Co., S.C.; JOHN

WM. SPIKES, Chambers Co. gave PA to HENRY M. SPIKES to collect from estate of
JOHN GITTY, Edgefield Co., S.C. for his wwife ANN SPIKES, nee GETTY. 1847.

ABNER A. BUCKALEW, WM. B. LACY & NANCY a> LACY (nee BUCKALEW), Chambers Co.,
all heirs of WILLIAM BUCKALEW, Edgefield Co., S.C. gave PA to SARAH BUCKALEW
to collect their share of estate of WILLIAM. June 1842.

FRANCES ANN STILL, Chambers Co., infant daughter of JOHN STILL, decd.,
Edgefield Co., S.C. & ELIZABETH STILL (now of Chambers Co.) who is guardian of
FRANCES ANN as well as of NANCY CAROLINE STILL & WILLIAM CASON STILL. Mar 1844.

MASON DAY, Chambers Co., guardian of his children THOMAS JEFFERSON DAY,
CAROLINE E. DAY & LUCINDA JANE DAY (all minors but over 14 years of age) Dec 1848.

MACK WREN, Coosa Co., gave PA to BATES WREN to settle up the estate of his
father in Edgefield Co., S.C. Oct 1847.

ELIZABETH W. TULLIS, Coosa Co., wife of NEWEL TULLIS, gave PA to NEWEL TULLIS
to collect her share of the estate of her father WILLIAM RAINEY & her mother
REBECCA RAINEY, cecd, Edgefield Co., S.C. Dec 1843.

THOMAS MCCRARY, Green Co. gave PA to JAMES MCCRARY, Barbour Co. to collect
his share as an heir from the estate of ANN MCCRARY, Edgefield Co., S.C. Nov
1848.

NANCY BRANDAWAY, Jackson Co., gave PA to NEALY MAYS, Abbeville Co., S.C. 1850.

LEWIS J. MATHIS, Montgomery Co., gave PA to his brother GEORGE W. MATHIS to
settle up estate of HENRY MATHIS, Edgefield Co., S.C. Feb. 1851.

MARSHALL J. BEAN, Pike Co., guardian of MARTHA THORNTON, minor heir of JOB
THORNTON, decd. of Edgefield Co., S.C. gave PA to HENRY C. BLOXOM to settle up
estate in Edgefield Co., S.C. 1849.

(The following three PA'S, along with the Kemper co., Miss PA, were attached
together. Two of them refer to the estate of THOMAS OWLE; the third to THOMAS
H. HOWLS (or HAWES), while the Kemper Co. PA had "THOMAS H. HOWL" Were there
1, 2 or 3 different persons?)

MARY GRAY & her husband JAMES GRAY, Chickasaw Co., gave PA to JOHN GRIFFIS to
collect her share of estate of her father REUBIN CARPENTER, Edgefield Co.,
