The library has newspapers, land deeds, census records on microfilm. They
also have a number of church records on microfilm. Death and marriage
records are another matter. SC restricts who can have access to those
records. Death records were not required to be filed before around 1915. I
have found that my best source many times for deaths is the local newspaper.
That is also true for marriages. The state did not require that information
until 1949. However, prior to that date, you can often find marriage info in
the probate court of the county where your family members were married.
In Greenville, the Probate Court, RMC, Tax accessor, etc are located in an
old mall about 1 and 1/2 miles from the courthouse. The courthouse is
located at the corner of Church Street and East North Street. The above
mentioned records in the mall are south(?) of the courthouse on the corner of
Church Street and University Ridge. The mall will be on your right. The
health department used to be across the street (University Ridge) from the
mall; I guess it is still there. If you are able to get the death
certificates, you can get them there for a fee.
One thing-there is a death index at the SC archives in Columbia. It goes
from the date the state began requiring death certificates through 1943 (I
think). There you can make a copy of the death certificate from the
microfilm.
