JAMES ANN TIMMERMAN HAZEL (1885-1955)

The following obituary was transcribed from the Scrapbook of Ella Ruth Hazel
Trotter, daughter of James Anna Timmerman Trotter. the date of death was
written on the obit, but not the newspaper name.

Mrs. J. H. HAZEL DIES SAT NIGHT - The many friends and relatives of Mrs. J. H.
Hazel were saddened to learn of her death at her home in the Bethlehem section
on Saturday night, January 29 (1955). She was the former Miss Anna Timmerman,
daughter of the late Ransom B. and Ella V. Timmerman and was the last surviving
member of her immediate family.
She and Mr. Hazel were married 50 years ago last Nov. 13. She united with
Bethlehem Methodist church in 1906 after her marriage, and remained a faithful
member until her death.
She had been in declining health for many years and an invalid for the past
two years.
She set a noble example of Christain living with her cheerful manner, her
gentleness and her uncomplaining spirit. Her influence will live on, inspiring
all who knew her to the richer, fuller, Christian life. Her trust and faith in
God enabled her to bear her suffering cheerfully and patiently. Although in
recent years she was not able to attend church, she nevertheless maintained an
active interest in its affairs. She will be greatly missed in the woman's
Society of Christian Service of which she was a member.
She had reached the age 69 last Sept. 30. She dearly loved her family and
always had their interest at heart.
She is survived by her husband, John Henry Hazel, one daughter, Mrs. George
Trotter (Ruth) of Saluda, and one son Fred Hazel of Chester, PA. Ten
grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Bethlehem Church Monday afternoon....Interment
followed in Bethlehem Church cem. Active pallbearers were James Edward Hazel,
Dr. Hoyt Dodie, Marion Witt, John Shep Hazel, Victor Simmons, and James
Timmerman.

There are several other obits for her, and one calls her James Anna Timmerman
Hazel.

The Scrapbook of Ella Ruth Hazel Trotter also states that James Anna Timmerman
and John Henry Hazel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Nov., so
that would be in 1954. Therefore I calculated their marriage date as Nov 13,
1904. They are buried together at Bethlehem Methodist Church Cem. Records,
Saluda Co, SC as sent to me by HC Ouzts.

HER father: From the Scrapbook of obits and pictures kept by Ella Ruth Hazel
Trotter, no date or name of newspaper written on the obit:

B. White. Interment was in the Bethlehem Meth. churchyard.
Mr. Timmerman, possibly the oldest man in this community, celebrated his
94th birthday last March 4. He was very active until two years ago, when his
health began to fail. Prior to that time his garden took first prize for the
past several years. He made his home with Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Setzler. One
daughter, Mrs. John H. Hazel of Saluda Co. survives him.

Another obit gives a little more information, extracted here: Ransom B.
Timmerman, 94, died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Virgil Setzler in
Saluda, Tuesday night May 3rd. He passed his 94th birthday on March 4.......
Mr. Timmerman is survived by one daughter Mrs. John Henry Hazel of Saluda.
Among the grandchildren of Mrs. Timmerman is Mrs. W. M. Berry of Johnston.

3. ROY HAZEL:

ROY HAZEL LOSES LIFE IN MISHAP - Saluda Co. Young May killed when Car misses
Curve and Plunges into Pond.
Another home in Saluda Co. has been reached by the awful toll of death from
automobile accidents. Roy Hazel, 22 year old son of Mrs. and Mrs. John Henry
Hazel, who reside in the southern part of the county about halfway between
Saluda and Johnston, lost his life Sunday night when the car he was riding
missed a curve and left the road just east of Graniteville, plunging into the
Graniteville pond. The automobile, a Ford touring car, went down in 15 feet of
water, but Hazel's body was thrown out. Divers half an hour later found it at
the bottom of the pond. The young man's neck was broken, presumably when the
car plunged into the water.
Miller Johnson of Johnston was accompanying young Hazel. The two having
spend the day in Graniteville and were on their way home when the fatal
accident occurred. Johnson was not injured, he succeeded in extricating
himself and swimming ashore.
The accident occurred at what is known as 'Seven Gates' where the road makes
a sharp turn to cross a lock that controls the water supply of the mills. The
young men missed the curve in the dark....Hazel was driving (this way for the
first time) and his friend forgot to tell him about the sharp turn in the road
to cross the lock, which fact resulted in the fatal plunge. The young man was
driving at a rate of 25 to 30 miles an hour, it is stated.
Another car was immediately behind Johnson and Hazel and the occupants
rushed to render assistance.....
Funeral services were held at Bethlehem Church, near the Edgefield-Saluda
county line Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, the Rev.
M. B. Patrick, of Saluda. The last sad rites were attended by one of the
largest crowds that has ever gathered at Bethlehem Church. The deceased young
may was greatly admired by all who knew him and was a youth of bright promise.
His untimely passing is a sad loss to the bereaved family and to his home
community.
