Subject: [SCGREENW] Land plats in SC

Most of you know that part of Greenwood County was formed from Abbeville
County. The Abbeville Courthouse had three fires 1872-1873 destroying
the deed books among some other records. This weekend at the archives I
found a plat in the state plats that shows the size and location of
Simeon Chaney's land. However, the plat was for the land that
surrounded his land on three sides-that belonging to James Gillam. For
some reason, the surveyor included the metes and bounds for Simeon
Chaney's land on the plat for James Gillam. So now I know exactly how
his land was laid out. I already knew where it was because the
descendants of Simeon Chaney hold title to the family cemetery. The land
plats are searchable online by name and/or location. You might want to
try this as an alternative method for locating the land of your
ancestors.
