"Quick reply" - do you mean this seriously? ;-)
a little more detailed:
Scleswig never belonged to the German empire - only Holstein did.
Secondly, this empire practically only existed up to around 1250
(Barbarossa, you know), after that time it was mainly paperwork with no
real influence on politics. So, in theory you are right that the duke of
Holstein was the subject to the emperor, but this was really nothing but
theory.
Or how will you explain the many wars fought between the different "parts"
of this "empire".
And what about the Austrian protestants, who found asylum in Schleswig
under the protection of the duke, who happened to be also the duke of
Holstein and the king of Denmark.
