Evy,

I read with interest you mail about the Westphal(en) surname. I have a
Antje Westphal(en) whom was born Jan. 4, 1811 at Krummstedt. Antje was
married to Claus Funk on Aug. 3, 1835 at Meldorf.

Krummstedt is to the north and then to the east a bit of Elmshorn..

I have no knowledge of who her parents were or of any siblings..as I have
not done the research that I need to do on this line. I don't remember
where the church records for Krummstedt are at, and I do need to order a
microfilm to see if I can find her family..

I don't know if it is possible that there could be a connection or
not....Sharon

Hi, Sharon,

it is
D-25727 Krumstedt, not Krummstedt, and the parish is in
D-25704 Meldorf. Normally the church records should be there,
hopefully that they have the time to answer your request.
I do not know how you can pay them - it is rather hard to have a
German bank change American cheques and you should not send $ bills.

Further lines to Evy - read below

I have a great-grandfather who lived in Elmshorn (Schleswig-Holstein),
maybe his whole life. His name was Georg Heinrich Johann Carl Westphalen.
He went mostly by the name Heinrich. I think he was born about 1815-1820,
but I am not sure where. I have tried to identify all the people with the
Westphal and Westphalen names during the first half of the 1800s in Elmshorn
of which there are very many. It is a common name there. But other than his
children, I cannot find anyone that I can presume to be a relative like a
father, brother, sister, etc. So, I am not sure if he was born there.
Is Westphal or Westphalen a common name elsewhere? Does it mean something?
Is there a connection between that surname and the German province of
Westphalia?
Does anyone have any thoughts or knowledge? Of all the names I see on this
list, I don't see Westphal(en) although it seems so common in Elmshorn.

Thank you, Evy

Dear Evy, your grandfather may have reached the 187ties, so after
1875 his death might be found in the registers of the
Standesamt
D-25335 Elmshorn
I shall be in Elmshorn on Thursday, Dec. 16 to meet with a friend
and fellow genealogist, will T R Y to leave at least a copy of your
request.
Westphal and Westphalen is a comparatively frequent name all over
Germany, will occasionaly look it up on my CD Forscherkontakte
where German genealogists deposit their findings - merely placenames,
family names an year besides the code for the submitter, which is
"on the rear". Right now I am too short of time. Bur you are ready
to wait for Xmas, why not for potential news ?
Best regards
