Thank you so much for the obit on Claus.
First I better fill you in on my interest in the Erps. My sons'
grandfather is Benjamin Harrison Erps, Ben's father is Peter Jacob Erps
and his father is Claus Erps.
The Peter Jacob Erps family have good records on his children and their
families.
The children I have for Claus are as follows. John Peter Erps, Maria
Caroline, born 1 Nov 1846 in Lunden and married a Walters, Claus
Hinrich born 1850, Peter Jacob Deddrich Erps 1857-1860, Anna Catharine
Erps 1859-1861, Julius Henry 1862-1942, Johanna Margaret Erps 1866-1949
The "story" I have been told regarding the sawmill is as follows but the
info I found and info from your email suggest there was an error and it
was John and not Henry as reported to me.
Anyway the way I heard the story was that Henry had married (where? and
to whom? )and a child was on the way. He and Julius were working at the
saw mill. Both were it the river with the long poles or picks directing
the logs into a chute to go to the saw mill. Henry's pick became stuck
in a log and it threw him into the river. Julius tried to get to him
but he went under and his body was never found. Julius told the widow
of the accident and then went and got his mother Anna to stay with the
widow. Later Julius and his brother's widow were married (where?),
possibly before the baby was born and moved to Minnesota where Julius
was able to buy an acerage that he had seen advertised. Julius and his
wife had more children.
Because the body was never found there was no death cert or burial.
Now from the records I listed earlier, Henry is married in Clinton Co
and has several children and dies there. Also list Claus and Anna as
parents.
I would have no problem accepting a mistake in identifing the brother
John instead of Henry as the person who was killed in the accident and
if I do that the records I have seen to make sense.
Can you provide the birth date of the first child born to Julius' wife?
This could help if I get ambitious enough to read newspapers to find a
notice of the accident. "Opps sorry I just reread and you did provide
Elvena birth date."
I have b een told that Peter Erps went back to the Clinton area with Ben
to visit relatives. Who would he have to visit if Johanna had left and
Julius was in MN. I have nothing on John Peter or Claus Hinrich in my
records except names
I spoke to a lady at the Clinton Library who had done research on river
accidents in the area and my story didn't ring any bells with her.
You asked about the Erb name.
I found this additional info on a copy I made of Claus from 1885-1886
city directory.
Erb, Howard, plstr, bds 303 n 2d st
Erb, Jacob, cigarmkr H. F. Jacobs, bds Arbor house
Hope this makes sense to you. Have a great day. Marilyn
