AFH,

Is this the earliest you find them in Buffalo?

I see that the youngest, age 10, was born in Bavaria, placing their
emigration post 1870 (and they are not in the 1870 census; I checked).

Have you tried any city directories, or the 1875 NY *state* census (both of
which should be on microfilm through your local FHL). I think there may
have been an 1885 state census as well; I'm not sure.

City directory listings through the 1870s would help you identify their
location as well as the first year they appeared, giving you a greater clue
as to their emigration year. If you can find any of their children in the
1900 census, it will indicate the year they emigrated.

Ah... I see from the 1880 census that they were at 324 Broadway. I'm not
sure where this was, but through the NYERIE-L mailing list, you could
probably find someone who could advise you on what churches this family was
likely to attend, based on their address, and then start looking at the
microfilms of those churches.

Max may still have been alive in 1890. The 1890 city directory shows a Max
Schmidt, saloon keeper at 984 Jefferson. BUT... In 1900 there is a
51-year-old Max Schmidt, cigar maker, who came over in 1872. So he *could*
be the 1890 Max. (Saloons... cigars... I dunno...) Mm... more likely is
that Max died by 1890 and his widow is the Mrs. August Schmidt living over
701 Broadway in the 1890 city directory. There is an Adolph Smith, laborer,
living at 813 Seneca (rear), also in the 1890 city directory. May or may
not be yours.

I could not find Augusta still alive in 1900 census. And I could not find
Adolph. I checked Schmidt, Schmitt and Smith.
