MARION - Raleigh Gladstone Smith Jr., 81, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness.

He was born Oct. 3, 1920, in Marion County, a son of the late Raleigh G. Smith Sr. and Edna Ruth Lane Smith. He was the widower of Kate Flowers Smith.

He retired from the S.C. Highway Department after 33 years of service. He was a graduate of Rains High School and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist where he was a deacon and a member of the Richard Perry Sunday school class.

Survivors include four daughters, Jean Smith Thompson and Judy S. Turner, both of Marion, Carole S. Anderson of Midlothian, Va., and Sue S. Coleman of Marion; nine grandchildren, Billy Joye, Ellen Smoak and Robin Turner, all of Marion, Darren Turner of Florence, Marion Anderson of Mechanicsville, Va., John Anderson of Chesterfield, Va., David Anderson of Midlothian, Jay Coleman and Hope Coleman, both of Marion; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Miriam Alford of Marion and Wanda Drew of Rains.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Norman Smith and Jimmy Smith.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Smith-Collins Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reedy Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Darrell Floyd will officiate. Memorials may be made to Reedy Creek Baptist Church, 2508 South Highway 501, Marion, SC 29571.
