Subject: [SCHORRY-L] In 1880 were there any 7-year-old servants in the Carolinas? Neelys in the Carolinas?

Hi,
I have a question for all Horry County, SC and Columbus County, NC
genealogists. In 1880 would a family have had a servant who was only
seven years old? I ask because I suspect that Edmun Nealey who is
listed in the census below as seven was really seventeen, that the
census taker meant to write "17" instead of "7." The Rabon family lived
in Bayboro, Horry County, SC, and Edmun Nealey is listed as their
servant. There are lots of Neelys (Neeleys/Nealeys/Nealys) in both
Horry County, SC and Columbus County, NC, and they moved back and forth
a lot. My theory is that Edmun Nealey below is really Joseph E. Neely,
the seventeen-year-old youngest son of widow Elizabeth A. Cartrette
Neely, then also living in Horry County (in John Grainger's household in
Green Sea township). She was the widow of Edmond Neely of Horry County
and Columbus County, who died in the Civil War at Gaines Mill, Virginia.
If they had a son named Joseph Edmond Neely, he would have been born
just after his father's death and be seventeen in the 1880 census. The
other known Neely children were sons Dalmon (Datmon), J. H., Lester,
Lisbon, and J. Richmond and daughter Louisa Neely. Both father Edmond
Neely and son Dalmon (Datmon) fought in North Carolina's 20th Regiment,
Company D. Sometime in the 1880s Sharlotte (Charlotte) Lee of Horry
County married Joseph E. Neely, and they lived in the Bayboro area of
Horry County. Their first child, Joseph Bowden Neely, was my paternal
grandfather. So, in 1880 would a family have had a servant who was only
seven years old? And, did Edmond and Elizabeth Neely actually have one
last child born just after Edmond's death in 1862? Any information,
help, or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sharlotte
