Subject: Death of Jehu Causey Jr.
Date: Fri, 13 May 2005 23:50:14 EDT
Hello Everyone,
Here is the article on Jehu III as written in the HCH 1905.
the Waccamaw Last Sunday
S.A. Causey and Jehu Causey Jr. were drowned while bathing at a timber
landing near Cox's Ferry last Sunday morning, and their bodies were not recovered
until late Sunday afternoon.
S.A. Causey in company with several others and a number of small boys, went
down to the landing on Sunday morning, and Mr. Causey took Jehu Causey Jr. and
two or three other small boys into the river to learn them to swim. They had
been playing around in the shallow water for some time, when Mr Causey told
young Jehu that if he would get on his back he would swim the river with him.
The boy got on his back and Mr. Causey started as if he were going across the
river, but when some little distance out, turned around and swam back with the
boy towards the hill. As he came toward the shore, he seemed to strike bottom
and stood up partly out of the water, the boy still on his back. After resting
for a few moments, he started as if to go on to the shore but went down and
rose from the water no more. Young Jehu could not swim and soon sank for the
last time.
There were five men present, but none of them could swim and there was no
boat handy or both might have been saved. A crowd gathered at the place as soon
as the news spread, and the bodies were recovered in the afternoon not very far
from where they went down.
Coroner H.H. Burroughs was present when the bodies were recovered and had the
following gentlemen summoned as a jury of inquest:
V.D. Johnson, J.L. Dozier, D.W. Oliver, J.G. Rhodes, J.A. Smith, L.P.
Roberts, R.L. Oliver, W.H. King, D.P. Green, W.E. McCord, J.L. Boyd, L.R. NIcholas,
W.E. Hucks, and H.F. Moore.
Dan'l Cribb, Joe Ray, Marion Ray, Richard Ray, and Julius Collins were
present when the drowning occurred and all were examined as witnesses.
Mr. Causey was a mamber of Live Oak Camp No. 124, Woodman of the World, and
nearly the entire camp turned out when they received the news of his sad and
untimely death. Jehu Causey Jr. is the eldest son of Jehu Causey Sr. and his
death is a sad blow to his parents.
The Funeral took place on Monday at the family burying ground near Conway
and the bodies were attended to the grave by the Woodman, and a host of
relatives and friends. The services at the grave were conducted by the Rev. Mr.
Singleton.
A telegram was sent to his brother R.G. Causey at Eutawville, S.C.
