Hi Kelsey,

I think I’ve probably got about the same info. on Harmon (or Herman) Hutto and Benjamin that you do (and would also like to make the “connection” between them). I am researching any and all Huttos from the Pelion, Swansea. Gaston, Lexington areas and these are two of the lines I am “stuck” on.

Here is what I have:

Herman (or Harman) Hutto (he is not listed in 1860 census, but his wife and children are)
Candice (wife), b. ca 1822 (in household #1485, 1860 Census)
Children:
1. Burton Hutto, b. ca. 1842 (from 1860 census, HH#1485) d. 8/3/1907 in Grapevine, TX (from Lexington Genealogy Association-LGE-1850 census annotated); married Lidia Rish
2. Murphy Hutto, b. ca 1844 (from 1860 census, HH#1485); lived in Pelion, SC (DOB and where he lived came from 1850 LGE census); he is in HH#62 in Black Creek Township in 1910 Lexington County census.
3. Aria Hutto, b. ca. 1847 (from 1860 census, HH#1485)
4. John Hutto, b. ca 1850 (from 1860 census, HH#1485)
5. Columbus Hutto, b. ca 1854 (from 1860 census, HH#1485)

Benjamin Hutto, b. ca 1789 in 1860 SC Census Household #1484

Children:

1. Charles Hutto, b. 5/26/1826, d. 4/2/1910; he is buried at New Hope Baptist Church, Pelion, SC. OBIT: Death of Charlie Hutto - Mr. Charlie Hutto, one of the oldest and best known citizens of the Pelion section, died at his home about two miles from Pelion on Saturday at the advanced age of 84 years. He is survived by his aged wife, and one son. His remains were laid to rest at Good (or New??) Hope church on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation. (Dispatch News - April 13, 1910)
2. Brittain E. Hutto, b. 1/29/1839, d. 10/22/1916, married Vastie E. ?; Corp. H. Co., 20th Reg. S.C. Infantry - 1860 Census HH#1484, buried at Hutto Cemetery near corner of Fish Hatchery Road and Busbee Road about 200 yards from the corner under several large pine trees. Both Brittain and Benjamin (his son) are on a double tombstone. Brittain ran a flour and grits mill at Mill Pond (now owned by Tootsie Thompson (Tompson’s pond). NOTE: Fish Hatchery Road used to be known as Britt Hutto Road. SEE MORE ON BRITTAIN HUTTO BELOW

4. Elizabeth Hutto, b. ca.1842 (1860 census HH#1484)

3. Benjamin F. Hutto, 7/27/1873, d. 7/27/1942 (buried near Thompson’s Pond in corner of junkyard and shares a tombstone with his father)
4. Skyler Gibbs Hutto, b. 8/27/1875, d. 3/4/1956, buried at New Hope Baptist Church
5. Lydia Hutto, b. ca 1878, married ? Walker
6. Florence Hutto, b. ca. 1881, d. 3/1970, married George Chavis and had a daughter named Nellie Chavis. OBIT: Mrs. Chavis Last Rites Held Saturday - Mrs. George Chavis, 89, of 2638 Dubard St., died Friday in her home. Mrs. Chavis, the former Florence Hutto, was the daughter of the late Vashti and Brittan Hutto of Lexington County. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Sharpe of Columbia. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, conducted by Bishop Orson G. Bone and Elder Clyde E. Black, Sr. Burial was in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery near Pelion. Active pallbearers were Astor V. Cleveland, J.Q. Adams, Ernest C. Gerald, Burrell D. Floyd, Lester T. Carroll and W. Clinton Branham. Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, was in charge. (Dispatch - March 12, 1970)
7. John L. Hutto, b. 10/13/1886, d. 5/29/1911. OBIT: John Hutto Killed. On Thursday afternoon about 4 o'clock John Hutto, aged 23 years, son of Mr. Brit Hutto, was instantly killed at the plaining mill of the Danville Lumber Company, near Pelion, while operating a truck. The young man had just begun work at the plant in the morning, and was not familiar with the workings of the car, which ran into the spur track. Hutto was thrown for a distance of eight feet, his neck and skull being broken by the fall. Magistrate C.R. Rish held an inquest, the jury returning a verdict in accordance with the above facts. The remains of Mr. Hutto were laid to rest in the Good Hope church yard on the following day in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends. (Dispatch - June 7, 1911)

1. Sumter Hutto, b. ca. 1863 - He went west and homesteaded in Texas. He married there and became rich when oil was found on his land.
