Emma,
It seems that your grand- mother, Emma Ballington, was my great- grand father's (John Eiferd Ballington) sister.
The data I have is as follows---Emma Ballington was born in 1866. Daughter of James Ballington and Harriett Wingard. James Ballington was born in Ireland in 1815 and died in 1871 in Lexington SC. He is the first Ballington on record. As the story goes--he was born to a middle class farming family in Ireland with a working wine vineyard. His mother died when he was young and he was raised by his uncle. He stowed away on board a ship to Canada at age 16. Working his way south on different ships, he found his way to Charleston SC where he met Captain Jeremiah Wingard who owned a fleet of river boats moving cotton and manufactured goods from Charleston to Columbia/ Lexington SC. Jeremiah died in 1839 and James took over the shipping business, building it to a profitable venture. James married Jeremiah's oldest daughter, Harriet in 1844, and he became an American citizen. During the civil war he moved supplies for the confederacy into Charleston to thwarp the union blockade. His s!
hip was sank at Battery Marshall, outside Charleston, and he enlisted in the A.S. Salley South Carolina troop until the end of the war. After the war and the loss of his ferry business he and Harriet moved to a farm in Lexington County. Both are buried in the old Wingard-Ballington cemetary in Killian Sox SC. James and Harriet had two sons and seven daughters. Margaret(born 1846), Rodella (born 1848), Jeremiah Calvin (born 1850), Barbra Ann (born 1854), Emma (born 1866) , John Efird (born 1857), Belva (born 1861), Amanda (born 1871) Jane (born ?). James died in 1871 and left land in the Red Bank Lexington area to his children.
Now for the Wingard side of the family---As I mentioned, Emma's mother, Harriet, was the daughter of Jermiah Wingard and Margaret Oswald and was one of eight children making their home in the Charleston SC area..
Jermiah's was one of 7 children born to Daniel Wingard and Christina Monts who made their home in the Orangeburg SC area. Daniel was born in 1786 and died in 1841. No dates are listed for Christina Monts.
Daniel was one of 10 children born to George Michael Wingard and Anna Mariah Ochs. George was born in Germany in 1744 and died in 1803 in Cloudy Creek (near Charleston SC). There is record of his service in the revolutionary war as a messenger.
George was 1 of 5 children born to John Adam Wingard -wife unknown. John Adam came to America aboard the "Elizabeth" from Roterdam Germany docking in Charleston SC on Jan 29, 1753. He requested 350 acres of land (50 arces each --John, wife and 5 children) in Cloudy Creek SC. This land was granted in 1775.
One interesting note---it seems that John Adam's last name was actually Binghart, however, when it was pronounced in english it sounded like Wingart and that is how it was listed on the imigration papers, and the name has continued since.
I hope this information is of value to you.
Best regards---Finley
