I found the author of "S.M.I.T.H.S.", Clara (Sister) Slaughter Nichols,
living about 5 miles from me. She still has 50 copies of the book for
sale at $10 each; send check to her at 759 Gypsy Lane, Mt. Pleasant, SC
29464. You can call her first to find out if your line is mentioned.
Tel. 803-884-0161. The Marion library, she says, has a copy. The Mullins
library does not.
I bought the book on a whim, not knowing the family--but this
morning while leafing through it again, all of a sudden I was staring at
a photo of one of my first boyfriends. We had a romance the summer we
were both thirteen, forty years ago. The snapshot was taken when he was
about 25, handsome in a tuxedo, standing with his pretty young wife. So
I think I'll hang on to my copy, since the book's still available from
