Dear Jo,
I surely could be mistaken, but I think the William Hase of the 1810 census
is mine--I mean, one of the Hays/Hayes family of Kirby Township.
The older male would be William himself and I can identify three of the
four younger males noted. If I am correct, they would be Eben b.
1798/1799, Dwight b. 1803, and Henry b. ca. 1806. That there was another
son who would fit seems to be supported by the 1820 household listing for
Hester Hays. I believe that William Hays died ca. 1820 and Hester was his
widow. Her 1820 household suggests that she had four sons with her just as
William Hase appears to have had four sons by 1810. (By the way I have
spent a good while wondering if the William Hays who married Elizabeth
Daniel and was part of the Kirby Township family was the other son, but
since the older William had a brother James who also had a son named
William, I am not sure.)
The existence of one of the two supposed daughters in the 1810 household is
confirmed in Hester's 1820 household; the other may, of course, already
left home. It looks like William had three more daughters between 1810 and
1820. Among them, Lucretia and Elizabeth A.. were listed as minors in his
estate settlement. I sure wish I knew what happened to Lucretia.
Elizabeth became my gg grandmother.
The 1810 William Hase household had 3 slaves; the 1820 Hester Hays
household had 4, but with 3 of these being under age 14, it is easy to
imagine that at least one was born between 1810 and 1820.
I am unclear on which of the other 2 females in the William Hase household
would be Hester and who the other might be; likewise, I don't know who the
free white male over 45 in the 1820 Hester Hays household would be.
Interestingly I believe that this same William Hays (listed as William Hase
in 1810) is listed in 1800 as William Hays Jr. I realize that Jr. does
not always suggest "son of", but I certainly wonder if the William Hays
household listed in 1800 could be that of the father of William Hays
Jr--and really also of James and John Hays of Kirby Township. This might
explain why there is a deed listing William and Hilly?? Hays. It might
also explain why Sellers reports about William Hays and his lack of Rev.
War service (his wife going temporarily) when it looks to me like Hester
and William would have been too young for that. Maybe reference was to
fatherWilliam and there was confusion because they had the same name. I
realize this is all very speculative, but I share it in case it gives
anybody interested any ideas or leads. It is my impression that James
Hays and his brother John Hays were both in Rev. War service in SC, but
William and William Jr have their first SC census listing in 1800.
One thing I really need sometime is more detailed information (I have the
abstract) on the estate settlement of William Hays. Somehow Benjamin
Miles ties in, but I don't know if it was through the marriage of a
daughter Hester or widow of William named Hester.
After all of this, I still realize I may be way off base...but thanks for
asking.
Larry
