Subject: [SCMARION-L] 1870 Census, Marion County SC, Hillsboro Township (7 -final)
Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 20:58:45 EST
1870 Census, Marion County SC, Hillsboro Township (7 - final)
Abstracted by Jo Church Dickerson from the microfilm at Marion Library.
I urge everyone to use the following primarily as a finding tool. Then go to
library or archives and see the microfilm original for yourself.
Items with a question mark were illegible. Numbers given as 1/1 are number of
residence visited / number of household visited. Other items are: age, sex,
race, occupation, value of real estate / value of personal property, place of
birth. Anyone familiar with the families of this area will realize at once
that there are abnormally few birthplaces given as North Carolina, including
some people known to have come from Robeson County. Presumably the enumerator
just wrote in South Carolina in many cases, when the people were actually born
in North Carolina. There are additional categories of information given in the
original census. Again, I urge you to see the originals.
Races: w = white; b = black; mul = mulatto
Infants' ages given in months (6/12 = 6 months old)
Both Indians and those of mixed race were given mulatto designation.
Notes in [brackets] are mine. For documentation of any of my statements or

END OF HILLSBORO TOWNSHIP, MARION COUNTY, 1870 CENSUS
Final note from Jo:
Many people are known to be missing from 1870 census. I can name several
families from personal knowledge: my own ancestors, James and Celia Brewer
Church. Also Barrett "Writ" Barfield Jr. family; Penny Miller and children;
and others. There was a lot of turmoil abroad in the south in 1870 -
reconstruction was underway. It has been suggested that many people just
wouldn't open their doors to someone sent by the federal government.
If you are missing someone you know was here, the 1870 agricultural
enumeration is a good place to check. Also, there was a state census taken in
1869. It is there, in 1869, that I finally found my Churches, who were also
missing from the agricultural census. I knew they were here 'cause they paid
their taxes in 1868. :-) All these records, along with the census, are
available on microfilm at the SC Archives, and most of them perhaps at LDS
History Rooms and other libraries.
I have been asked if I'll be posting other townships. Sorry, this is the only
township I've copied in it's entirety.
Happy hunting.
Jo Church Dickerson
